St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Harpenden Dolphins on Sat 29 Jun 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 10 wickets

Match report On a blisteringly hot day at SLCG the 3XI lost the toss and were surprisingly put into bat on a wicket looking much improved in recent weeks .

Harpenden Dolphins are top of the table and being new to the league are probably in a division too low for their ability but Saints were feeling positive coming ,as they were , off an impressive win against the 'other' Harpenden last weekend.

Andy 'Rudders' Rudlin and Steve 'Fergie' Ferguson opened the batting and adopted a customary watchful approach on a strip that has been the downfall of many batsmen this season .

Things went well initially with both batsman manoeuvring the ball around well and despite some hostile bowling rotated the strike intelligently .

Fergie was the first to go , nicking off to the 'keeper with Rudders following soon after , unwisely reaching for a wide one, which brought last week's half centurion Harry Knill-Jones and Moksy Islam to the crease.

Moksy was hit square on the helmet in the first over he faced by the surprisingly quick Roche who then produced an absolute corker of a ball soon after , which jagged back off the seam to smash into off stump . A duck for Moksy .

Meanwhile, HJK was working hard and putting together another decent innings - which eventually came to an end on a hard fought 34- as those around him struggled ; the next 4 wickets falling for just 31 runs .

The innings was made somewhat respectable with the arrival of Joe Button and Andy Milnes at 9 and 10 respectively , who put on a splendid half century partnership to post a reasonable score of 157-9 at the end of 45 overs , Button's 42* particularly worthy of a mention in despatches.

After tea and a welcome respite from the heat Saints took to the field feeling they had posted a competitive total and eager to bowl.

Moksy and Zach West took the new ball but it soon became clear that the opening batsmen were of a decent calibre as they immediately set about their work in ruthless fashion punishing the (too many) bad deliveries . Andy Milnes joined the attack but he too found no joy as the scoreboard ticked over with worrying speed .

Harry Knill Jones and Andy Saunders came on to try their luck and the run rate did slow as they both exerted a measure of control , but wickets weren't forthcoming and by now both batsmen were well set. Josh Mulvaney got some turn and Joe Button bowled a couple of decently paced overs at the end , catching the edge of one of the batsmen (a chance that was shelled ) but it was a thankless endeavour and Saints total was overhauled in less than 29 overs for the loss of no wickets .

Credit must go to the Dolphins opening batsmen , both of whom finished on 76*, but this was not on the whole a good bowling performance and some reflection and self-analysis is needed before next weekends match away at Northampton Exiles .
