Northampton Exiles II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 06 Jul 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report St Albans IIIs travelled to north London for their round nine fixture, to take on Northampton Exiles II.

After some deliberation, Walker, winning his 7th consecutive toss, elected to bat first on a wicket that looked a little uneven.

From the first over, it was obvious that there was some life in the pitch, several deliveries rising high from just short of a length. 2-17 spelled early trouble for Saints, but fortunately Hancock had started to see the ball well, striking the ball firmly down the ground or through the covers. A fourth wicket partnership of 34 between Parkinson and Hancock, who dealt with bowling that continually challenged - swing, pace and spin were all on show - took the score on to 70, at which point Hancock was well caught for 44 valuable runs. The calibre of the home team's fielding showed itself throughout the innings with several terrific catches and a couple of middle order run outs that further damaged Saints progress - Uttam conceding fault here, though a direct hit from point is never expected. The scoreboard was largely becalmed in the face of good bowling and Saints stumbled to a meagre total of 96.

Things had to go right very quickly when the team took the field if 96 was to be defended, and Telkman did well to nab a wicket with the second ball of the innings. The ball was doing enough to give Saints hope, but Patil was showing no fear in his swashbuckling approach. On another day one of his mishits might have found a fieldsmen, but today the boundaries were found instead as he smashed his way to 72 not out. In truth, there was little wrong with the bowling, but the game reached a swift conclusion as Saints sunk to a nine wicket loss.

While much credit goes to Northampton Exiles, who collectively played what may have been the game of their lives, this was a disappointing result from a strong St Albans XI.

The threes have reached the half way point of the season with a 4 wins-5 losses balance, to sit in fifth, but falling behind the top four. There is plenty to play for over the coming rounds.
