Wheathampstead II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 17 Aug 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by six wickets
Match report
Under a sharp shower, the IIIs made the short journey up the road to Wheathampstead for their latest fixture.
Walker hoped that the wicket - suffering a little from Friday's downpour - would improve under the sun, and decided to bowl first.
Upon taking the field, the Aussie in the team then loudly called for "sandpaper", causing much derisory laughter. No mischief was intended; somehow sawdust and sandpaper had been muddled in the search for an accessory to dry some patches of dampness.
Baylis was given the new ball and quickly worked up a good pace, while maintaining a good line - the openers looked unsettled, and Baylis found a way through to take the opening wicket. Telkman swiftly followed with two of his own, and Saints had the best of the early exchanges with Wheato 19-3 in the 10th over. However Telkman was immediately hit over the top by the new batsman, Robbins, and this set the tone for the next period of play. Robbins, returning from injury, and Ledger, a quality player but out of form, compiled a century partnership in good time, forcing the skipper to ring the bowling changes with the run rate well above four an over.
Eventually it was Islam who made the breakthrough, taking out both set batsmen, and finishing with 3/28. Having dismissed the key pair, Saints now regained control. Saunders added a pair of wickets, thanks to two good catches, from Baylis at mid on, and from Saunders himself. To finish off the innings, Baylis earned the reward of two wickets to finish with 3/19. Saints had done well to claim the last seven wickets for just 35 runs as the hosts were bowled out for 163.
After a fine tea, Rudlin and Ferguson began the task of chasing down the opposition total. Ferguson, recalling days of yore, was the aggressor and moved to 36 in an opening partnership of 58 - a third consecutive half century opening stand for the IIIs. Rudlin was again key to the tally, reaching 41. The middle overs hurried along, with runs not easy on a slightly two paced wicket. Nav (20) and Moksy (15) provided useful contributions, as Robbins and Ledger now showed their value as bowlers.
The required run rate had risen to six an over, raising a few nerves in the St Albans camp. The 43rd over proved crucial, Baylis Sr (35 not out) hitting a trio of boundaries as 16 runs came in the over to take the sting out of the chase. Knill-Jones then seized the moment, finding the mid wicket boundary to take Saints to their target.
This was a fighting victory, another pleasant success for the IIIs, their third win in a row. Winning certainly brings a good feeling - hopefully there is more to come.
