Lutonian II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 18 Jul 2020 at 1pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 76 runs

Match report The IIIs belated season opener saw the team travel north to take on promoted side Lutonian on a pleasant July afternoon.

Things being less than straightforward in the “new normal”, the local council had denied the hosts water, and so neither drinking water nor toilet facilities were on hand, and of course changing rooms were off-limits. Nevertheless, there were 22 cricketers keen to get on the field.

Lutonian won the toss and chose to bat first, and lost an early wicket to some poor running - Broxton and Wilton sharing the honours to complete the run out. Thereafter, the batsmen acquitted themselves well, making the most of the somewhat too frequent loose delivery. Newcomer Tom Broxton’s introduction to the attack upped the ante as he bowled with good pace and accuracy, while Andy Saunders gave the batsmen something different to think about, as he brought about the inning’s second wicket, well caught by Harry Saunders on the boundary. The locals were able to keep the scoring moving along at a decent rate - Zaheer and Sameer both hitting half centuries - without ever really getting away, and might have counted themselves fortunate with a couple of umpiring decisions. Walker (2 wickets) and Price finished off proceedings well, but the pick of the bowlers was Broxton whose eight overs deserved better than one wicket. The fielding was generally good, with Najib managing a direct hit run out and Parkinson’s outstanding efforts at point notably saving many runs, but the story of the innings was probably that there were just too many boundary balls from the bowlers. Early season rust perhaps?

With a quick outfield and a decent wicket, albeit one staying a bit low, a target of 217 was not insurmountable. However Saints were not able to make a good start, with a couple of unfortunate dismissals, coupled with some decent bowling. It was only when Wilton, top scoring with 26, and Broxton joined forces that scoring picked up and the pair of Toms accumulated a decent partnership to put a little pressure back on to Lutonian. Behind the run rate already, the demise of these two really put the game beyond Saints. A blocktastic knock from Harry Saunders and a persistent innings from Price added some respectability to the score, but in the end the hosts were very comfortable victors.

This was not the most convincing of League starts for Saints, with an understandably half-hearted feeling to proceedings, in this half size season. With a game under our belts, and a return to home territory next week, the skipper hopes for some improvement.
