St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Greenwood Park CC on Sun 25 Apr 2021 at 12:30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 75 runs

Match report After the almost balmy April temperatures of Saturday , Sunday arrived accompanied by a fresh, unforgiving breeze that necessitated double jumpers and base layers for some.

The Phil Caley nurtured Clarence Park looked a cracker and having won the toss visitors Greenwood Park elected to bat .

Openers Adil and Asad were clearly class operators and set about anything loose with a series of ruthless cuts and pulls, with the score ticking along somewhat alarmingly in the opening exchanges. Saints strike partners Saud Fattah and Altaf Hussain stuck to their task doggedly though and on a strip suited to batting kept both batsmen honest with some sharp deliveries. Hussain particularly bowled nice, tight lines .

Skipper Andy Saunders entered the fray to change things up with his slow left armers and soon picked up the wickets of both openers, Adil bowled attempting an ill-advised sweep across his stumps and Asad well caught behind by debutante ‘keeper Ben Geytenbeek

The game was starting to swing back in Saints favour as more slow bowling was introduced in the form of Ed Lowe. The run rate eased and Ed Lowe claimed the wicket of the dangerous looking Paul.

Enter though Arslan who powered his way through the Saints bowling with some big hitting to race to a quickfire 74 before being dismissed trying to sky one off Umar Muhktar, Greenwood Park eventually finishing on an impressive 238-6 from their 40 overs.

A tough couple of hours for some of the Saints bowlers in the face of some decent batting but this is what these pre-season matches are all about – getting a feel for the ball again and shaking off the close season cobwebs.

After a chilly tea break sat shivering on the Clarence Park boundary, Saints openers Ed Lowe and Zach Tarrant took to the crease and set about the opposition bowling with relish .Zach raced to 22 before being adjudged LBW , while Ed built a steady innings eventually caught in the deep for a notable 72 not quite getting enough on another leg side boundary attempt.

New player Mohamed Nijas chipped in with an eye catching 20 and Bilal Siddique offered a 12 run cameo but the Saints innings ended 75 runs short after their 40 overs.

Batting out the overs with 4 wickets still in hand though was a good effort though as the players showed some good, early season grit in the face of very decent opposition , which will stand them in good stead for the coming season.
