St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI v Totteridge Millhillians 1st XI on Sun 02 May 2021 at 1:30PM
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 78 runs
Match report
Some unexpected rain before the toss didn't dampen the building enthusiasm of a young St Albans team who assembled in anticipation of the chance to grace the Sandpit Lane hallowed turf to sign-off on pre-season preparations ahead of the league season starting next week.
The home team was left waiting a little longer when, on winning the toss, the opposition skipper scurried away to seek counsel from his team as to what to do. With moisture in the air, a lush wet(ish) outfield, leaden skies and a green May wicket, it came as no surprise that St Albans were inserted; although the length of time it took to make the decision was.
The St Albans openers didn't let the mind games - intentional or otherwise - influence their approach however, and with 35 overs to play with set about dispatching the loose ball and carefully negotiating the danger of the new ball attack.
The 50 partnership was reached in the 9th over with Broxton (14) departing soon after but a solid base had been laid for the other St Alban's batsman to capitalise upon. Davey signalled his intentions by finding the boundary immediately with some lusty blows replicating the approach of Lowe (48) who just fell short of his 50 which contained eleven 4s. A couple of quick wickets showed that there was enough in the pitch to keep the bowlers interested. Ahmed, playing with maturity beyond his years, dabbed and nurdled to get his eye in before some hard hitting took him to 41 and St Albans in sight of 200. With Khatavkar (11) he put on 33 valuable runs for the 8th wicket before 9, 10 Jack fell in quick succession to finish on 202 in the 33rd over.
A generous tea break was requested by the opposition but the keen St Albans team promptly took to the field to signal their intention to get the job done and maintain the advantaged gained after losing the toss.
With the pitch now dry and sun shining over the Sandpit Lane pavilion, the bowlers needed to be on top of their game to ensure the TM batsman didn't get off to a flyer. Husain (1-16) and Khatavkar (1-19) did exactly that and TM were reduced to 14-3 in the 6th over thanks in part to a catch from wicketkeeper Cunningham and some excellent fielding from Davey whose laser accurate throw from the boundary to run out Mymin was synonymous with the all-round enthusiastic effort.
Walsh, a great source of encouragement in the field, and Salahin took over and against the strong middle order bowled well to ensure that the TM batters had to work hard for their runs. A strategic fielding effort eventually came to fruition as Salahin claimed the valuable wicket of Lubin thanks to an amazing catch by Geytenbeek who battled the swirling wind, the sun and even handed off a couple of team mates to poach a snow-covered skyer. A valuable wicket and an abridged drinks break saw Broxton (2-19) and Davey (2-6) join the bowling attack. Not wanting to settle for one magic moment in the match, Geytenbeek then put the outcome beyond doubt with another fantastic catch at long on to remove the TM number 5. With the game still needing to be finished off, Umar came on and bowled to his field with great accuracy as Geytenbeek (aka The Magnet) took catches number 3 and 4 of the match to seal a well-earned victory.
