Gully Boys XI v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 18 Jul 2021 at 12.30
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report A tight defeat for the Sunday 2nd XI on a scorching hot day at Rothamstead Park. Missing star bowler Ciaran Walsh to a late covid issue, skipper Andy Melling won the toss and put Saints into bat. A big thanks to Ben Killner and George Pelham for stepping in last minute as Covid substitutes.

Davey and Pete Melling opening the St Albans innings with varying approaches. Melling finding the fence off the front foot and Davey blasting the ball to all parts of Rothamstead Park. After Melling departed for 12 Cunnington came to the crease and soon found the cover boundary with some exquisite drives.

After Davey’s departure for brisk 42, solid middle order runs from Dulon, Finley and a boundary-less Tarrant took St Albans past 150. Cunnington was unlucky to miss out on 50 eventually departing for 44. Some big hitting from skipper Melling took St Albans to within touching distance of 200. Pelham was able to arrive in time to take St Albans past 200 aided by an average protecting 1* from Ben Killner. St Albans finishing on 204 all out in the last over

The heat made conditions tough for the bowlers but tight opening spells from Finley and Altaf immediately put Gully Boys on the back foot. Finley making the early breakthrough knocking back middle stump with a searing delivery. Gully Boys began to chip away at the total probing spell from Dulon went unrewarded before Tarrant picked up St Albans second wicket. Lbw or caught nobody is quite sure but clearly out one way or another. With Gully boys continuing to chip away a pacy spell from Ireland wielded the next break though aided by the bucket hands of George Pelham at mid-wicket. Pelham himself claimed 2 scalps with an LBW and some good glovework from Cunnington behind the stumps. However, a frustrating partnership for the 6th wicket saw Gully Boys to their target not before Altaf pick up a well-deserved wicket bowling the number 7 for 49. Gully Boys winning by 4 wickets with 3 overs to spare

An enjoyable match played in good spirits. A tough day for bowlers, batsman and fielders alike.
