St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Shenley Village 4XI on Sat 25 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 65 runs

Match report
On a blustery day when even keeping the bails from continually blowing off the stumps was a challenge, skipper Saunders obviously lost the toss and was put into bat by Shenley in this crucial Division 10 East promotion match.

Last week’s half-centurion Nadeem Arif was asked to open the batting again and after warming up with a cigarette on the boundary walked out with partner James Grant.

The early going was slow with decent bowling restricting the run rate to less than three an over before James top-edged a skier which was well caught in the deep. Nadeem dug in and managed to notch 16 before he was bowled and after Zach Tarrant departed on 8 Saints were somewhat becalmed on 61-3 at drinks.

Najib Khan looked in good touch before he found himself walking back to the ‘pavilion’ after scoring 11, which saw James Lawrence and Sam Davey come to the crease.

From there on in the game turned, with both batsmen taking a ‘Bairstow and Stokes’ approach to proceedings and carting the opposition bowlers around the ground to record an entertaining partnership of 106. With fourteen 4s and one six in his magnificent innings of 83, James in partnership with Sam whose seven 4s and two sixes saw him to a well-deserved half century, effectively took the game away from Shenley and when Prath ‘PD’ Deshpande blasted a quickfire 28 from just 13 balls alongside a decent cameo of 13* from Prath ‘PK’ Khatavkar Saints total of 253-7 from their 40 overs was looking like a very tough chase indeed.

Saints didn’t have it all their own way to start with; the Shenley openers raced to 44 without loss as they found a decent rhythm and ran well. PK bowled really tight lines and should have had more reward for his efforts but it was the introduction of the “in-ducker king” Nadeem Arif who despite having to run up the hill into a gale was having none of it and promptly dismissed the two openers in his first six balls and then went on to remove all of the top four in a beguiling eight over spell of bowling.

Left arm spinner Jamie Speller, who is fast becoming a young talent to watch, came on from the Astro end and kept things tight for his one wicket and PD also grabbed one in his spell. Sam Davey followed up his batting heroics with an LBW and with the opposition needing 30 an over by this point skipper Saunders who had been a proud but passive observer for most of the proceedings brought himself on to see out the game, which was long since won by that point.

Six wins out of the last seven, another fantastic 30 points to consolidate the 4s second place in Division 10 East and a strong message sent to other promotion contenders ......let’s keep this great form going!
