Wheathampstead II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 21 May 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report An energetic Threes team travelled north to No Man's Land to take on Wheathampstead in the League season's third fixture.

With both teams splitting their two opening fixtures, a win would edge one towards the top of the table. Walker managed to lose the toss, calling "arches", aka tails on a souvenir North American coin. Saints were asked to bat.

Nisar, back in the 3s, opened up with Church, who gallingly found his defensive push roll back on to the stumps. Street, searching for runs, but looking in the wrong direction, found himself short of luck again. Saints were on the back foot early as Creswell found some swing and a challenging line.

Fortunately Melling and Nisar managed to quell the attack, though not without alarms. Having added 70, the quest for urgency led to a run out, Melling gone for 26.

By this time the hosts had moved to an all slow attack, and this brought wickets, the middle order failing to come to terms with the gentle pace. With Nisar out for 44 - marked, as usual, by some sweet shots through point - Saints folded too quickly. Berry played some attractive strokes for 14 and Curran added 18. But just 136 was on the board.

Wickets were needed and Curran and Berry, on his 3s debut, were entrusted with the new ball. It was Curran who snared the first, his pace and angle challenging both batters, with a catch well held be Church in the gully. Berry, meanwhile, found a good rhythm, even as opener Dabare tried his luck - and kept coming up trumps.

Curran (2/32) forced his way through the defences to grab another, and Berry added one of his own. 3/40 - plenty left in the game. But with Dabare finding the boundary too often, the game threatened to get away. When (Nathan) Kleiner-Mann picked up his first wicket, aided by a fine catch from Caley, Saints were still in it.

However, despite running through a string of bowling changes, Saints could not break the 5th wicket partnership, with Li particularly positive on his way to 60, and the game slipped away, the early energy having evaporated.

With a second loss early in the season, the Threes have some work to do to get back on track.

St Albans player of the match: Joey Curran.
