Hitchin III v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 04 Jun 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 80 runs

Match report The threes, having won twice at home, and lost twice away, travelled through light Saturday drizzle to Hitchin, passing Knebworth House where crowds were already gathering to see Liam Gallagher. Would it be Cigarettes And Alcohol to follow a Saints win?

The toss was lost, but the preferred option, bat first, was achieved, with one latecomer delayed by the bad weather at Clarence Park.

Nissar and Murray began in confident fashion. Nissar pounced on anything short outside off stump, slaying the red leather through point. Murray complemented this by picking up the full deliveries and clipping through midwicket. Just as important was the urgency shown in the running between wickets, singles being sought at every opportunity (including some that weren't on at all), with calling sometimes replaced by mind-boggling osmosis as the preferred means of communication. Undoubtedly, this put the pressure on the fielding side, who fumbled on almost every occasion, frittering away run out chances.

Without a single maiden in the innings, Hitchin struggled to contain, and the milestones kept arriving - team 50, Murray 50, team 100, Nissar 50 - to the drinks break and beyond. In the 28th over, the partnership had reached 133 when Nissar was out for a well fashioned 58, a great opening. Murray continued on to 83, a powerful contribution. The innings did not quite kick on from there, with a couple of unfortunate dismissals, but still the 40 over total of 206 looked formidable. There was a sniff of cigarettes and alcohol in the air.

Rosson and Berry were assigned to work with the new ball, and the latter quickly found his way through a defensive push. Rosson found a teasing line from the other end, but with a quick outfield, runs flowed quickly. A change of ends over from O'Toole became a set of four, yielding an important second wicket after a partnership of 52. On a wicket that was a bit spongey, batsmen were never quite in, a succession of batsmen getting a start, then finding themselves dismissed. Walker chimed in a with a pair of wickets, and Murphy added one, as Saints worked their way through their opponents. With the exception of a couple of missed catches, the fielding was strong throughout, an important contrast to the home team.

Glazier, on his introduction to the threes, found himself on a hattrick inside his first three deliveries, and added a further victim to finish with 3/5. With Murray managing a direct hit runout, it was left to the returning Berry (2/33) to close out the match with another victim bowled. Saints ran out winners by the comfortable margin of 80 runs.

Victory here lifted the threes into the upper echelons of the Division 8A table. In a tight division, there is plenty more work to be done, but over the past few weeks the team has shown that it is more than capable of pressing for promotion.
