St Albans Cricket Club 1XI v Langleybury 1st XI on Sat 20 Aug 2022 at 12:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report A short note before this match from the 1s to the club: apologies for the hasty exit of all but 3 of the side; what has become quite a tradition for the club this season of every side making efforts to stick around for a couple of beers and dissection of the day was somewhat sullied by a grumpy 1s team – we will do better!

The day started with a game of Vortex with no vortex (maybe this was the jinx that was put on the side in hindsight). What followed was a poor warmup for the most, with a slightly tired Coulman after his three days of cricket and beers, an extremely late Sims and dropped catches aplenty from the rest of side.

Spirits were lifted when Regan announced how good of a tosser he was and that the Saints were batting.

Once again Regan Jr and Snr were tasked with seeing off the new ball and everything had started well, some good striking from Jamie accompanied some good running from Joe and everything was looking rosy. After getting into some rhythm Jamie was then bowled, bringing the in-form Mude to the crease who set about pushing the scoreboard along.

The Langlebury bowlers then began bowling tight and restricting the run rate but the scoreboard ticked over steadily. Regan tried pushing the fielders harder, however in the quest for the extra run was comfortably run out. This unfortunately spelled the start of a horror show couple of overs for the Saints in which saw the wickets of Regan, O’Toole, Coulman and Sims fall for just 13 runs. This really was a devastating blow, which put the 1s massively behind the eight ball.

Mude at the other end watching this disaster, stubbornly carried on. Capaldi now with him and they ticked the scoreboard on. Unfortunately for Saints Mude was really the only batsman who batted with any sense of maturity and as he reached back-to-back 59s Saints limply finished in 157. Very much an under-par score and one that would need a strong bowling performance to defend.

Hounslow and Regan Jr opened the bowling, both exerting exemplary control, the Langlebury openers struggling to get either way. If St Albans carried on in this manner the win would certainly be on. Unfortunately, a difficult caught and bowled chance was dropped by Hounslow and Saints were wicket less until Kumar struck in the 19th over, the score now 51/1. If wickets started to fall it could still be on.

A short flurry of wickets around drinks gave St Albans a sniff, but a solid innings from the Langlebury number three, ably assisted by a few down the order saw them home in the 44th over.

A chastening defeat made even worse by news of other scores around the county.

St Albans now agonisingly third with two games to go. Two strong performances required and little help from the cricketing gods please!
