Old Elizabethans v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 05 Jun 2022 at 11:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 32 runs

Match report Following Saturday’s clean sweep the Sunday 1s aimed to continue winning ways with a trip to Old Elizabethans. Despite the overnight rain OEs were adamant the game was on, much to the surprise of many. Some badly calculated rain cards possibly played.

OEs won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a decent deck. Opening bowlers Nathan Kleiner-Mann (2-23) and Lucas Berry (1-19) bowled consistently to the field that had been set and both were rewarded with wickets. They were backed up well by Altaf Husain, Moksudul Islam and stand-in skipper Ben Adshead. There was an encouraging spell at the close of the innings from Tom Townend (2-23) who bowled with great control, picking up some important wickets. OEs closed on 122-9 from their 20 overs which was a great effort from everyone, especially considering OEs were fielding a side where most of them play regularly in Division 2A.

Chasing the runs weren’t going to be easy on what proved to be a tricky wicket. Openers Murray and Islam set about the task with caution but in the first over Stu got one that stuck in the pitch which he could only help to spoon to cover. Moksy was joined by Rory Law and the two batted sensibly, following the captains’ orders and gave us a reasonable platform.

Unfortunately, wickets began to fall quickly with Islam, Law and Dulon Ahmed all falling quickly and all of a sudden, the game began to drift away from St Albans. There were useful contributions from Josh Kleiner-Mann (13) and Adshead (20) but in truth the game had got away from us. Saints ended 90-8 in 20 overs but this was a valiant effort considering the strength of the opposition.

A valuable learning curve for the members of the team who possibly hadn’t played against many teams as strong as this, everyone acquitted themselves very well to the task though.

It would be wrong not to give a huge thank you to James Kleiner-Mann who stepped in at the last minute due to a late dropout and did a great job behind the stumps. Onto next week for the big one, game 1 of the Chess Valley league season.
