Potters Bar III v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 22 Jun 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 15 runs

Match report The Threes looked to get back to winning ways this week, but made an absolute meal of it in their chase at Potters Bar.

Arriving at Dame Alice Owen’s School, Potter Bar III’s home ground, after some sharp showers, the ground was a little wet, and the wicket a touch grassy. Skipper Lawrence chose to bowl first.

The bowlers appeared to vindicate that decision. Winfield quickly found a challenging length and some zip off the wicket. At the other end, Milnes recalled his years of experience playing in the 1s, to shape the ball beautifully. Winfield’s stellar figures of 1/3, across six overs, deserved more in the wickets column. Milnes, briefly bemused by the first ball charge down the wicket by the hosts’ number four, bowled his eight overs straight through, twice knocking over the stumps.

There was little easy for the batters as, by and large, St Albans bowled as a unit. The wicket was doing just enough to make shot making difficult and the bowlers were consistent in their lines and lengths. Berry, O’Toole and Hicks each nabbed wickets and the fielding held up well.

The end result was that Potters Bar could tally no more than 106. Saints left the field very satisfied, perhaps feeling that the job was done.

Of course, that is where it all started to go wrong.

“JD” Curtis, finding his spikes more a hindrance than a help, chipped one to mid on to start what was quite a procession. A sequence of poor shots from the middle order saw Saints quickly in the mire. Wynne-Griffith, in his first game for the IIIs, showed good composure, the left hander finding the bowling more to his liking than his teammates.

With O’Toole out for a kamikaze three ball duck, shortly followed by Wynne-Griffith (37), Saints had lost eight wickets before the drinks break.

Winfield and Walker held up Potters Bar’s march for a time, and then Milnes struck the ball nicely, but it was all too late, with Winfield bowled by a seed to finish the game.

Potters Bar deserved their 15 run victory, but in truth Saints had lost this, rather than been defeated by a better team. The threes, particularly the batters, will be working hard to lift their game next time out.
