St Albans Cricket Club Won by 64 Runs

Match report After a strong performance the week before the 5s looked to carry on their potential promotion charge at the Spritual home of St Albans cricket, the Sandpit Lane astro. A late change saw Hugo Thomas come into the side.

Andy Melling duly won the toss and elected to bat. AKJ and Fin McNab strode out to the middle hoping to build on their impressive opening stand last week. A youthful Hitchin opening pair did cause some early issues and found some movement. AKJ soon found the boundary to get the 5s going and McNab at the other end looked untroubled. After AKJ departed Hugo Thomas strode out to the wicket and soon began dispatching the ball to all parts ok Sandpit Lane's lush outfield. An imperious pull for 6 over square league setting the tone for a fine innings. Thomas and McNab saw St Albans to 80-1 at drinks and 50. With the instruction to push the rate up McNab took this onboard and began to up the rate picking on any width. McNab departed shortly after having once again done a Sterling job of seeing off the new ball and laying a platform. Thomas soon brought up a well deserved 50 with another glorious pull shot. Thomas was well caught at mid off for 63 sparking a collapse in the St Albans middle order that saw St Albans slip from 102-2 to 107-6 thanks to some good bowling from Hitchin and some questionable running from the St Albans skipper
Sud came out in his usual style and cautiously saw out 3 maidens....just kidding he went on counter attack pouncing on anything short with disdain. With some rapid and sensible running between the wickets him and Tom Cocks put on 40 in 4 overs. This took the St Albans score past 150 and changed the momentum of the game. With Sud departing Finlay Kilner came continued the charge towards 200. Cocks brought up a fine 40 ball 50 in the final over with a golf swing celebration. Kilner then wrapped up the innings with his first ever 6 with St Albans finishing on 220.

Defending a good score Kilner and George opened the St Albans bowling innings with their usual pace and hostility and it was not long before George found the top.of off stump to bring about the opening wicket. Some defiant batting saw off the openers and a usual rapid spell from Sud 'Shoulders' Suryavanshi. As has been often the case this season his pace proved borderline unplayable going for 4 runs off his 5 overs troubling the Hitching batsman at every turn. A key breakthrough on the stroke of drinks saw wickets falls in quick succession with Andy Melling finding the edge shortly after. Fin McNab's leg breaks brought about more 2 deserved wickets thanks to fine catches from Vijdener, Cocks and the returning Maroof.

The bets was yet to come from the latest debutant from the Pies Production line Zac Johnson. Johnson's perfectly flighted off breaks bamboozled the remaining 4 Hitchin batsman with Andy Knill Jones taking two fine catches. Johnson finishing on a very impressive 4-29 on debut
