St Albans Cricket Club Girls U13B v Harpenden CC - Under 13 Girls-2 on Mon 01 Jul 2024 at 18:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 19 runs
Match report
St Albans U13 96/6 (net score 267) v Harpenden 97/10 (net score 247) - St Albans won by 19 runs.
It was Harpenden; the form team with six wins from six matches; the Big Match; bigger than anything Elton Welsby and Jim Rosenthal had worked on in the ITV studio; live from Sandpit Lane. The girls weren’t concerned; they were fresh from a Saturday smackdown at Hitchin where got their first win of the season by 48 runs. They had their plans and they knew how to execute them.
Having lost the toss and being asked to bat, captain Constance had her own plans, slightly controversial ones which involved shaking up the batting order. After some quizzical looks and an intervention from Kelly, normal service was resumed and Elaina and Aanya were reinstated as the openers. Like having Bouchier and Beaumont open the innings, runs often flow freely when Elaina and Aanya are in the middle. And the scorers were kept especially busy when Aanya was on strike in the third over as she struck three identical pull shots through the square leg boundary and then a fourth boundary in the pair’s penultimate over – the pair scoring 33 (which is almost certainly a record pair score for this season, as is four fours in an innings from Aanya).
Constance, wearing her brand new, freshly-collected-from-Pies, bright white kit, and Lauren were up next. And the runs kept coming with Lauren scoring a boundary and good running between the wickets taking the pair’s total to 24. Megha and Shloka got some useful runs whilst Freya and Charlotte, as the final pair, kept out some accurate bowling with Freya stroking a glorious drive over the cover boundary. St Albans finished on 266 having lost just 6 wickets.
It took just eight balls for the St Albans bowlers to stamp their mark on the match. Elaina taking two in the second over (one caught by Lauren at cover point and one run-out) and Aanya with the first ball of the third over (bowled). With Shloka tidily bowling the fifth over the opening Harpenden pair had been restricted to just 10 runs - an outstanding effort. And the story of the next ten overs was some mean bowling, conceding very few extras and regular wicket taking from Charlotte (with a wicket-maiden), Aanya taking her second wicket and two run-outs.
As the final pair made their way to the wicket in the sixteenth over, Harpenden needed 44 to win. A big ask but fielding hadn’t been easy and both teams knew that a couple of wickets would see St Albans home.
Over 16 | 44 to win: A well-run two from Freya’s first over, a run out at the non-striker’s end coming back for a second and an all-run four on the final ball following some Keystone Cops-style attempts to create a run out. 2 off the over.
Over 17 | 42 to win: Excellent bowling from Constance to keep the score down since the batters were backing up hard and were often well down the track by the time the ball reached the striker. Taking singles and turning them into twos was proving easy as the girls rightly chose to protect the boundary rather than cut out the singles. Lauren seemed to be everywhere in the field both limiting the runs and backing up well. 8 off the over.
Over 18 | 34 to win: Freya took some tap conceding two consecutive fours through square leg and the noise from the boundary was deafening as the Harpenden girls gave their batters all the encouragment they needed. On the fourth ball the batter edged behind for Elaina to take a sharp catch at the wicket. Exactly what the girls needed after an expensive over up to that point. 5 off the over.
Over 19 | 29 to win: Whilst victory was improbable a couple of boundaries would have meant for a nervy last over. In her two previous overs Charlotte had astonishing figures of 2 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for -3 runs. It was squeaky-bum time and the pin-drop silence as Charlotte started her run-up only added to the tension. She bowled a tight over, including three dots, keeping their big-hitting captain at the striker’s end at the end of the over. 7 off the over.
Over 20 | 22 to win: Harpenden needed a big over and Freya’s job was made easier with the Harpenden captain at the non-striker’s end. The fielders were on the boundary and the girls were under instruction to carefully return the ball to the wicketkeeper after fielding. Some tight bowling meant that no further boundaries were scored and Elaina managed to effect a run out following a chest-high no ball from Freya. 3 from the over and St Albans win by 19 runs. Absolute scenes at Sandpit Lane!
Player of the match as voted for by the opposition: Aanya
As per the match at Hitchin, the big difference was in the girls’ bowling. We gave away 19 in extras whilst Harpenden conceded 33 – almost the winning margin.
