Tring CC v St Albans Cricket Club 6XI on Sat 15 Jun 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won 96 runs
Match report
Following a brief consultation with his crystal ball on Friday evening, skipper John prophesised via email “The game is ON until I tell you it’s not.” By Saturday morning the hobby meteorologists were questioning his foresight and wisdom as they watched great bands of rain drag their wet feet across the rainfall radar on the Met Office app. Hopes for playing at Tring seemed to fade with bright spells being followed by huge downpours and a flurry of WhatsApp messages confirming that all the other St Albans matches were victims of the rain apart from the 1s. The skippers had a plan to defeat Mother Nature as the start time was delayed first by half an hour and a second time until 2.15pm to give the pitch a chance to dry out with the match being reduced to 30 overs.
St Albans lost the toss and were put in to bat which wasn’t to everyone’s liking but considering last week’s very brief 6XI match against Leverstock Green, where the oppo were skittled for 47 which was chased down in 9 overs, all were hoping for a Proper Match where the batters have a bat and the bowlers have a bowl.
John and Matt opened the innings under glorious blue skies with the wicket rapidly drying out due to high winds. The pair batted well together with Matt facing a greater proportion of the balls which somewhat suppressed John’s scoring options - he fell on the final ball of the tenth over; an opening stand of 46. Sud was up next and he and Matt accelerated the scoring rate with some glorious boundaries; St Albans 87-1 at drinks.
The partnership of 49 was broken when Sud (22) was bowled, bringing Suli to the wicket. Suli grew in confidence the longer he spent in the middle finding the boundary twice. Matt was caught at the wicket for the day’s top score of 59. Ben was out cheaply and Ethan joined Suli at the wicket. With 10 overs to go Ethan did a great job of turning 1s into 2s and encouraging Suli to get on his bike when running between the wickets. The pair pushed the score along until Suli was caught behind for 23. Nathan and Jithin gave Ethan valuable support as he powered on, scoring 34 not out including an all-run four in the penultimate over. St Albans finished on 167-6.
James and Nathan led the reply and the response was immediate with both swinging the ball nicely and each taking a wicket in their first over. After four overs Tring were 5 down for 14 (James with 3 wickets, Nathan with 2) and in order to get everyone a piece of the match, Frank and Fin were brought into the attack. Frank maintained the pattern, also taking a wicket in his first over (Fin waited for his second over for his first wicket) and Tring were reeling at 23-7 off 7 overs. This was super stuff from the St Albans bowlers!
Fin continued bowling really neatly and ended his spell with the day’s best figures of 4-0-4-3. At 35-9 in the 12th over, with the sun disappearing behind some menacing clouds, the rotation of the bowlers wasn’t having the desired impact since the final pair of batters were intent on batting out for a draw or waiting for the rain to return. Matt, Suli, Ben and Ethan threw everything they had at them and it was finally Ethan who bowled Tring’s highest scorer with a slower ball. Tring bowled out for 71 and St Albans won by 96 runs.
