St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 36 runs

Match report St Albans 5XI travelled to Great Missenden on a windy afternoon with three u15s , one debutant and few 5XI legends against Northwood 4XI, but after arriving at what we thought was the right ground we found out that Little Missenden 4s actually play somewhere completely different (although only 5 minutes away); this despite skipper Immy confirming the ground with the opposition skipper three days beforehand- but never mind , we managed to find it eventually and were apparently not the only team to have been given the wrong directions!

Skipper Immy won the toss and didn’t hesitate to bowl first on a windy afternoon with rain forecast on what looked like a tricky pitch. Tom Hadden and James Witty were the opening bowlers with the latter spot on from the first ball, using his experience and swinging the ball both ways and finding some help from the pitch. Saints had their first success in the 4th over, a great delivery by James and an even better catch w by Tom Cocks. Soon afterwards Tom Hadden found his rhythm and another great catch was taken by Cocksy. Northwood 4XI were 28 for 2 after 10 overs and Immy came in as first change with Archie Hill from the other end, both were tidy but didn’t have much luck with dropped catches not helping things.

Change was needed and on came 5XI legend Fin McNab and young Suli Nisar - both were accurate with some unplayable deliveries and Fin got his first success, bamboozling the well-set opening batter who came out of his crease to be expertly stumped by Tom C. Suli didn’t disappoint and bowled Northwood’s skipper for 4. Later in the innings Immy and Tom Hadden came back , Immy picking up a wicket and Tom finishing the innings conceding just 1 run in the last over.

Northwood had scored 160 after 40 overs with too many dropped catches and some below par fielding contributing to their score.

Two 5XI veterans Matt Shadwick and former skipper Andy Melling opened the batting for Saints and didn’t disappoint initially, , playing some lovely shots before Andy fell on 4 , which brought Jude Berry to the crease who proceeded to play some lovely shots including one to remember - a straight drive lifted over the bowler’s head.

Soon after, both Matt and Jude both fell to decent catches, which brought the debutant Abdul Alim to the crease. He was looking good before playing a frankly suicidal scoop for 20. The skipper was next in and tried to be positive by hitting a lovely boundary before being trapped LBW, followed by Fin McNab who sadly lacked support and ended up stranded on 22 not out with Saints all out for 124.

This was a disappointing performance overall but in fairness Saints have started the season with a difficult early schedule against some very good teams and the overrising message is stay positive and don’t be disheartened as that first win is just around the corner .
