The 4XI having somehow held onto second place in Div 9E despite having not won a game since the 28th June , travelled to third from bottom Kimpton on Saturday with hopes high for a win and an opportunity for an uptick in fortunes.

Skipper Saunders inevitably lost the toss on an overcast day and Saints were put into bat on a green one, with opening veterans Manny Nisar and Andy Rudlin sent out to get proceedings underway. Both made a fast start with both batsman taking advantage of a true pitch and fast outfield with Manny the first to fall on 21 to be replaced by wicketkeeper Ben Hingston who was tragically trapped LBW first ball .

The real fireworks, however, commenced when Debashil Sinha Roy strode out to the middle and started the bashing the ball to all corners , ably supported by first Rudders (29) and then Prath ‘PD’ Deshpande who amassed a well made 34* with contributions from the remaining batsmen , including a magnificently ludicrous six and out from Joey Curran (when he finally arrived at the right ground).

Debs was eventually bowled for 80 and was the key in taking the Saints score to an impressive 224 after their 40 overs . The team’s scoring rate was much slower in the second half of the innings than the first however and there were questions at tea as to whether a few runs had been left out there, something that would prove insightful at the end of the day ….

In Nathan Roos and Altaf Husain Saints have two of the best opening seamers in the division and it was Roos who made early breakthroughs , snagging both openers with less than 50 0n the board while Husain toiled economically but without reward at the other end. This brought to the crease Kimpton’s star batsmen on the day , a youngster not lacking in confidence who set about his business with purpose . Despite further wickets falling to Roos (he ended with excellent figures of 4-34) and Tim Winfield, Kimpton maintained the run rate , not helped by some poor bowling (the skipper included) and several chances and half chances in the field going down.

A sixth wicket partnership of 83 kept the pressure on and despite a number of bowling changes to try and find an answer , the key breakthroughs didn’t come until it was too late with Kimpton scoring a six to win (and bring up the batters hundred) with just one ball to spare.

Having slipped to 4th after the loss The 4s need to find a way to win in their remaining games if promotion is to remain a realistic possibility
