Northchurch CC 2nd XI v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 14 Jun 2025 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 44 runs

Match report This week saw the ‘Big City 3rd XI’ travel to the picturesque village of Northchurch—without one noticeable absentee: the skipper, who decided no one in his side was good enough to bat in the top four of the 2s, so he had to do it himself. He rightly received appropriate backlash across the weekend for that. See you next week, Westy. With the skipper gone, the armband passed (purely due to DBS reasons) to Lawrence, whose toughest job turned out to be getting JC and Murph to the ground—one of whom had just rolled out of bed at meet time, and the other was sat in a café trying to escape the doghouse.

Glorious sunshine and probably the nicest ground in the division awaited, with Northchurch yet to win a game this season. A huge toss, then, for the stand-in skipper. Luckily, Lawrence called heads correctly and elected to bat on what looked like a good surface with an immaculate outfield. Deb and Rudders opened proceedings, the former edging perfectly into the gaps within the cordon to get the Saints off the mark. Rudders also started nicely, punishing anything short. But a good yorker sent him back to the pavilion, and Deb followed shortly after. Stu and Ash came to the crease to begin the rebuild, Stu crashing his third ball for four before being adjudged LBW. With the score at 35/3 after 8 overs, questions were starting to arise—would Westy regret dropping himself to the 2s? Lawrence was next in and channeled his inner Westy—not by choice—as he played and missed at will outside off stump. Spin was introduced, and shudders rippled through several of the Sunday pros in the 3rd XI as the scorers called “Garraway.” A name we knew well, never having gotten the better of him during his time at OE’s (who play in Div 1). There were confused faces all around when we realised he was now turning out in Division 7 West.

Ash looked solid at the other end, and the pair nudged and nurdled their way to 70/3 at drinks. This brought a change in pace from the Northchurch attack—a grenade-launching leggy who tossed his first delivery so high that umpire JC had to turn his back to avoid laughing. Ash and Lawrence capitalised well on the loose deliveries, and runs began to flow. Ash brought up his 50 first, with Lawrence reaching his own shortly after—only to fall next ball, bowled trying to target the short cow corner boundary. An important 107-run partnership had steered the Saints back into control, with the score at 142/4 in the 30th over. Ash, now motoring, was joined by Rayden, who ramped and swept effectively—much to Tooley’s annoyance, who had just risen from his 30-over power nap after feeling "dizzy" (hungover) to watch the closing stages. Run machine Ash brought up a magnificent ton in the final overs.
Rayden was finally bowled attempting a scoop for 31, ending Murph’s pad rash as he came out and knocked a single to ensure himself a red inker. Ash clearly didn’t want one himself, as he found cover’s hands with the final ball of the innings, steering the Saints to a strong total of 230 after a helpful final 10 overs.

After a quick tea, veterans Smith and Telkman took the new ball, both settling into rhythm from ball one. Telkman made the breakthrough in the 6th over, bowling Northchurch’s number 2. This brought Garraway to the crease, who creamed an on-drive first ball—immediately signalling to the Saints that we had a game on our hands. Fortunately, the other opener was in no rush to score, happily patting back the majority of the opening 20 overs and seemingly allergic to twos. As early as the 12th over, Garraway was declining singles. Murph and JC were next into the attack and bowled well to their fields—at this point, almost everyone was out on the boundary, much to the amusement (or dismay) of spectators in the pavilion. Skipper Lawrence had no shame, taking full advantage of the lack of fielding restrictions in the dizzying heights of Division 7 West. Garraway, now seeing it like a beach ball, brought up his 50. Drinks clearly signified go-time, as he began hitting to all parts while his partner continued to door it at the other end. Stu and Deb were introduced, but Garraway kept cashing in, eventually bringing up his hundred in the 32nd over, with Northchurch needing just 90 more to win.
Thankfully, it was 100-and-out for Northchurch’s number 3, who nailed one straight down Chaz’s throat at long on—to the relief of the Saints. Chaz then returned to the attack and picked up one himself, and Northchurch ultimately fell 44 runs short. An important win for the 3s, who can’t afford to drop many more points in the promotion hunt—especially with Westy already getting us penalised 15 points!
