Match report Saints 5XI welcomed Langleybury 3rd XI to Sandpit Lane, fondly known as the Home of Cricket, for a crucial league encounter. With both sides locked in a relegation battle, the stakes could not have been higher. The Saints’ plan was clear – win the toss, bowl first, and maximise points. Unfortunately, skipper Imran Ahmed lost the toss, and Langleybury, sharing the same mindset, chose to bowl first.

Saints opening batting pair Nasibullah Maroofkhel and Praveen Kumar began confidently, rotating the strike and punishing the odd bad ball. The partnership reached 44 before Praveen was dismissed for 13. Pete Melling followed soon after, leaving Saints wobbling slightly. That brought youngster Daiwik Khedekar to the crease, who combined with Maroof to steady the innings with a promising 40-run stand. But just before the drinks break, however, Maroof was unfortunate to be given out caught behind for a well-made 34. The innings wobbled again, and at 119–7 Saints were in real danger of being bowled out cheaply. A vital counter-attack from skipper Imran (27) and a handy cameo from Tom Cocks (17) lifted the total towards respectability. Despite disciplined bowling from Ben Marshall (3–33) and Prateep Gupta (2–34), Saints battled their way to 175 all out – a fighting score that gave them confidence heading into the second half.

LangleyBury in reply never really got going, as the Saints’ attack struck early and often. Maroof and Tim Winfield took the new ball, with Maroof swinging it nicely and keeping runs tight. At the other end, Winfield was devastating, tearing through the top order with a superb spell of 4–20 from 8 overs. Skipper Imran Ahmed (3–32) applied further pressure in the middle overs, and Nadeem Arif (2–21) chipped in with important breakthroughs. Despite a determined 52 from Paul Crawley, Langleybury had no answers, and the innings eventually closed on 99. Fittingly, it was youngster Daiwik who claimed the final wicket, sealing a commanding 76-run victory. This was a complete team performance from St Albans 5XI – gritty batting contributions throughout the order followed by a ruthless bowling display. The result not only boosted morale but also gave Saints a huge lift in their battle for survival as the season enters its closing stages.
