With memories of their record victory in the away fixture, St Albans welcomed Wheathampstead to Sandpit Lane. After winning the toss and choosing to field first, captain Ishara gave her bowling order to first-time scorer Freya – who would go on to produce the most-legible U13s scoresheet of the past two years - and the girls took to the field.

Alice and Kyra bowled in tandem and, using the wind blowing from left to right across the batter, produced a fine display of away swing bowling. Alice took a wicket in her second over (bowled) and the first pair of batters finished on 15. Ishara kept rotating her bowlers with Eleanor, Kaya and Florence all bowling neatly with Eve keeping well behind the stumps. Eliska was bowling with wheels and used her pace to take her first wicket of the season in the 10th over.

It was at this point that Alice took over the gloves and set herself up behind the stumps. Rather than standing in an orthodox manner, she adopted a new stance - not dissimilar from the one Marcus Trescothick used in the twilight of his Somerset career when fielding at short second slip – on her knees, hands ready for catches. Sadly none came her way but she superbly kept byes to a minimum, diving around like a goalkeeper. The final wicket fell in the 19th over; Kyra the bowler and Wheathampstead finished on 276.

Captain Ishara and Eliska led the St Albans reply with Ishara staying on-brand and enthusiastically backing up a long way down the pitch, stealing singles and calling well. As was also customary for Ishara, she scored a lot of her runs on the leg side, with three fours scored between the fine leg and midwicket boundary. Eliska supported well and the pair finished on 36 – the top-scoring pair in the match.

The Wheathampstead bowlers upped their game and kept things tight for the next two pairs: with Kaya and Eve scoring 20 - Eve hit one four - and Eleanor and Alice scoring 15. The girls had done a great job by this point having not lost a wicket in the match so far. The score was on 271 just five ahead of Wheathampstead.

The final pair, Kyra and Florence knew that they couldn’t afford to lose many wickets if St Albans were to continue their winning streak (3 wins on the bounce and counting):

Over 16: Five off the over, the scores were level.

Over 17: Kyra hit a four off the first ball and took six from the over, St Albans 6 runs in front.

Over 18: Florence defended well for the whole over: a maiden, St Albans still 6 runs in front.

Over 19: Two wides in the first two balls and a single off the third gave St Albans some breathing space but with a wicket lost on the final ball, St Albans were now just 6 runs in front (again!). A couple of wickets lost in the final over would be curtains.

Over 20: A wide delivery followed by a single meant St Albans were almost home. Florence kept out the next two balls with a wide on the final ball. St Albans won by 11 runs and continued their fine form!
