Match report St Albans Women’s 1XI travelled to Broxbourne on Sunday under challenging circumstances, fielding only nine players—yet still produced a performance full of team spirit. Despite a five‑wicket defeat, the display was one the squad can be proud of.

Batting first, St Albans posted 138–8, a total built on determination and some standout individual contributions. Anum Ahmad anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 42, showing patience and control while wickets fell around her. She was supported by valuable runs from Evie Davis (16), Amy Price (14) and Freya Witty (12), who all dug in against disciplined Broxbourne bowling.

A special mention must go to Jayde Ellis, making her debut for St Albans. Arriving with the modest disclaimer that she was “happy to be just a ringer,” Jayde proceeded to prove she was anything but. She smashed a rapid 15 from just 5 balls, including two boundaries and a six, injecting vital momentum into the innings. Her impact didn’t stop there—she bowled tidily and fielded with real energy, slotting seamlessly into the side.

Defending a hard-worked total with only nine players was always going to be a test, but St Albans rose to the challenge. Freya Witty led the attack brilliantly, taking 3–28, including two key top‑order wickets. Evie Davis also impressed with 2–36, bowling with accuracy and heart. With gaps in the field inevitable, the bowlers and fielders worked tirelessly to keep Broxbourne under pressure for as long as possible.

Broxbourne eventually reached the target in the 28th over, but not before St Albans had made them work hard for every run.

Given the circumstances with reduced numbers, a debutant stepping in, and a strong opposition, this was a performance full of character. The team showed resilience, adaptability and togetherness, and there were plenty of positives to take forward into the rest of the season.
