St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 118 runs

Match report St Albans 5XI travelled to Baldock for their away league match on a hot, sunny afternoon. Selection was challenging across the club this week, but there was a real positive in the number of young players stepping up, with six Under-15s representing the 5XI. Congratulations also to Jacob Brewer, who made his men’s league debut and impressed with the ball.

After winning the toss, St Albans made an excellent start with the ball. The opening spell was disciplined and kept the scoring under control. Imran led from the front with outstanding figures of 5-2-13-1, while Vishwa was equally economical, conceding just 8 runs from his 4 overs. Jacob Broome was the pick of the bowlers with 3 wickets, and Praveen Kumar claimed 2, but a fine innings of 70 from Michael Cullum helped Baldock recover and post a competitive 221/8 from their 40 overs.

Chasing 222 was always going to require a strong start, but losing early wickets left Saints with a mountain to climb. Zac Johnson showed great determination and was the standout batter with a well-compiled 47, while Tom Dalkins contributed 14. Unfortunately, no other batter was able to build a significant partnership, and St Albans were eventually bowled out for 103, falling to a 118-run defeat.

Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take away. Once again, we fielded a very young side, with six Under-15 players gaining valuable experience in senior cricket. They showed great commitment, character and willingness to compete, and those experiences will only help their development.

Results like this are disappointing, but they do not define us. We’ll learn from our mistakes, continue to work hard in training, and come back stronger next week.
