Bamville CC Saturday 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 11 Jul 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 59 runs

Match report A much changed 4th XI made the short journey across St Albans to the idyllic setting that is Napsbury Park. On arrival the team were pleasantly surprised to see that the Bamville pitch, notorious in the league for being awful, had improved significantly this season.

A bowling heavy side had been picked by captain Davey and therefore at the toss he was satisfied by Bamville’s decision to bat first. Opening up were Husain and Paramesh, who both settled into their rhythm quickly. It didn’t take long before Husain got the first wicket of the innings, the opener middling one straight to the hands of Saunders at square leg. After 4 overs each of good pace bowling in the heat the openers were replaced by Saunders and Davey.

The first change pair bowled with great control and restricted the run rate heavily in the middle stages of the Bamville innings. The built pressure would lead to the next wicket, a run out from a direct throw from stand in wicket keeper Islam. Davey would then get his reward for his toil, the set opener spooning a catch to Husain who took it well. Not to be shown up by his bowling partner Saunders then joined the action, taking two wickets, caught by Nisar and Husain. The pair ended with figures of 8-1-21-1 and 8-1-31-2, great work on a sweltering day.

Knowing that Bamville batted all the way down to 11 bowling changes were kept to a minimum and Nisar and Winfield would join the attack to bowl the remainder of the overs. Nisar, welcomed back to the team with open arms, bowled really well, with good flight and guile which frustrated the Bamville batsman. He picked up his wicket with a really smartly taken caught and bowled. Winfield settled into his rhythm quickly and picked up a couple of wickets, one stumped the other bowled. His spell was again very good, despite some last over yips!! Bamville restricted to 164 on a pitch their captain described as being good for 250. Credit to all of the St Albans bowlers and fielders.

Opening up the reply were Melling and Arif, with the instruction to take their time and try to build a platform for the hitters lower down the order. Unfortunately that platform wouldn’t last long, Melling playing on in the 3rd over and Arif following a few balls later going for a big yahoo on a slower ball. Nisar and Islam were charged with rebuilding the innings and they took slightly different approached. Nisar blocked well and rotated the strike where possible. At the other end Islam slapped one over for 13, playing some glorious shots that only Islam could play. He was then unfortunately bowled by a short pitched ball which didn’t get above ankle height. St Albans in trouble having lost their top order for not many.
Leal joined the fray on 4th XI debut and looked composed, well drilled and at home in adult cricket. He played a number of nice shots before unfortunately being pinned in front of his stumps LBW for 2. This brought to the crease another 4th XI debutant Rehber, who proceeded to hit one of the biggest shots ever seen in the 4th XI, the ball ending up in the freshly harvested field next door. Unfortunately the onslaught didn’t last long, Rehber out for 13.

New batter Paramesh and Nisar took their time in the next few overs trying to get St Albans close to the total before Nisar was unfortunately bowled for 18, a good effort in the circumstances. This brought to the crease Davey who had one thought in mind, get batting bonus points. He proceeded to hit a number of fours off the bad balls on his way to the teams top score of 23. Paramesh and then Davey would both be caught in quick succession trying to play one too many shots.

The innings ended soon after, with both Husain and Saunders bowled looking to get as many runs as possible. St Albans 60 runs short.

This was a loss, but there were many things to be proud of in defeat. The bowling innings was great, with a number of players standing up and bowling with good control. The team fielded well and stuck at the innings for the full 40 overs. There was potential with the bat, but the 4s will probably feel they needed another 50 runs from the top 4 to be competitive. 11 bonus points against top of the table not a bad result given availability.
