Match report Southgate Compton’s sun-baked ground provided the setting for a must-win clash for the 4s, and after losing the toss on a scorching afternoon, St Albans were asked to field first — ultimately proving to be a very good toss to lose as the visitors battled to a dramatic two-wicket victory.

Altaf and PD opened up for the 4s, with Southgate cashing in early on the short boundaries despite both bowlers striking once. The momentum shifted when Sam Davey and returning veteran Andy Saunders entered the attack. Together they dragged the scoring rate down from six an over to under four, building pressure through disciplined lines and relentless accuracy.

Saunders, who had suffered a painful back spasm bowling the first ball of his spell, was outstanding, conceding just 11 runs from eight miserly overs and unlucky to finish with only one wicket. Winfield then picked up where the change bowlers left off, claiming three key wickets to keep St Albans in the game. Even so, with professional ice hockey player Sam Brazier anchoring the innings superbly, Southgate still looked set for a daunting total.

A brief and unsuccessful spin experiment from Moksy gave way to Jamie Coffer — and the change worked instantly. Coffer removed the dangerous Brazier for 74 before ripping through the lower order with two more wickets, helping bowl Southgate out for 156 in 36.2 overs.

The fielding effort from the 4s was excellent throughout. Energy stayed high despite the heat, chances were taken cleanly, and Grant held onto two sharp slip catches as St Albans backed up the bowlers brilliantly.

Opening again was Manny, making a guest appearance from the UAE, and St Albans came out swinging. Moksy launched the reply with a blistering 28 from just 14 balls, crashing five boundaries to seize the initiative immediately.

Hugo Thomas and Andy Wright then produced the key partnership of the chase, combining composure with positive strokeplay to add crucial runs in the middle overs. Their contributions of 34 and 30 pushed the 4s towards three figures and into a strong position.

But Southgate hit back hard. Mark Willis produced an excellent spell of 3-20, wickets began to tumble, and the chase suddenly became tense in the afternoon heat.

Sam Davey’s valuable 26 lower down the order proved critical in steadying the innings before PD delivered one of the grittiest knocks of the season — an unbeaten 6 from 43 balls, refusing to give his wicket away as the game tightened. Alongside him, Altaf Husain finished unbeaten on 12 and fittingly sealed the win in style, first drilling a booming cover drive for four before launching a flat-batted six over midwicket to secure the 4s’ first victory of the season.

In brutal conditions, St Albans showed resilience, discipline and character to grind out a memorable away win — a proper team performance and a deserved breakthrough result for the 4s.
