St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Old Cholmeleians CC 2nd XI on Sat 13 Jun 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
The fours were back at Sandpit Lane for round six of the Division 9 East fixtures, pitted against Old Cholmeleians. In 2025, Old Cholms had managed the double over Saints, but were sitting bottom of the league table as they arrived at Sandpit Lane. Saints sensed an opportunity for vengeance.
Having successfully navigated the latest Saturday morning team shuffles, skipper Davey followed up by winning the toss and was pleased to bowl first. The pitch looked in good order and felt firm, a testament to groundsman Fergie’s persistent use of the roller, following the week’s deluge of rain.
Captain’s privilege - or was it the foibles of availability? - meant that Davey opened the bowling, coming down the hill, partnering with Winfield. There was a long sequence of dots, the batters reminded of the increasing count, as the two bowlers started well. Perhaps too well, Davey wryly observing that the ball was doing too much. Eventually the scoreboard ticked over - slowly. 12 overs in, with 20 on the board, the openers made way for a pair of old stagers in Saunders and Walker.
Old Cholms skipper Halstead was surprised by the extravagant shape of the first delivery from long time foe Walker and bamboozled the next, edging to keeper Roberts - and walking - having managed 4 runs in 38 deliveries. A vigorous appeal for LBW came next ball and suddenly Saints had two.
A good catch from Thomas followed, before Saunders, after a sequence of four consecutive maidens, knocked over the stumps. Walker added a fourth wicket, then confessed to the skipper that he’d “quite like five”. An eighth over brought that five-for and, as the incoming batter was assessed, ambitions for more. Of course that notion was dispelled with the delivery of a pair of wides. Still, 8/2/16/5 were fine figures, a return to former glories.
Saunders added another to close out his spell, and finished with the similarly imposing eight over figures of 2/12. Late call-up J. Witty made the most of the opportunity that came his way, nabbing two wickets in two overs, and that left Khedekar to finish off the innings.
Old Cholms never got going, all out for 68 in 32 overs, all of this immaculately recorded on Freya Witty’s colourful scorecard. All the bowlers performed well and for once the fielding was sharp. A special mention to keeper Roberts who did an excellent job behind the stumps, with the ball swinging all over the place.
Roberts and Moksy Islam were asked to open; the latter swiped one boundary but was well caught before adding more. In at three, Khedekar started watchfully before dispatching a few poor deliveries. He settled into a rhythm, working the ball into gaps and running well for his 26 no.
Roberts was finding his feet with the bat and built momentum into his innings, too. At the point of one shot crossing the boundary he acknowledged that his new bat was working properly after all. From this point, the game finished quickly, Roberts (40 no) striking another six to seal victory.
Old Cholms finished the game disappointed and a little unhappy with a decision that had not gone their way, taking just one point from the fixture. Saints’ comfortable victory left skipper Davey to reveal how proud he was that Saints had put away a weaker team and grabbed the win. With 30 points, Saints climbed to a more respectable mid-table position, with Bentley Heath in their sights next.
