St Albans Cricket Club Boys U12B v Radlett CC Under 12 B on Sun 21 Jun 2026 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 26 runs
Match report
On Father's Day at a sun baked Sandpit Lane, St Albans' under 12s took on top of the table Radlett. The reverse fixture had seen St Albans losing narrowly a few weeks prior, so a tight match was expected, with a reversal of result the ultimate aim for the Saints.
Iolo was appointed to captain duty, and duly won the toss, electing to bowl in the searing heat, while also waiting for our 10th man to arrive. Instructions from the coach focused on doing the basics well, bowling straight and concentrating in the field (and not letting on that we were to be one short for the first 9 overs of the match). Dev took the new ball on debut, bowling a nice line and length; forming a nice partnership with Dexter who found the edge a couple of times but saw the ball land wide of third man. Radlett's openers were solid, and took the score to 231 after the first 4. A run out showed the intent that St Albans were after; the first piece of excellent fielding for the day. Josh bowled first change, and picked up wickets (both clean bowled) with his first two deliveries. The hat-trick ball wasn't to be, but he kept his pace and completed the first maiden of the match. Iolo bowled with Josh and conceded 10 from his two overs. Josh's second over brought another wicket (two overs, one maiden, three for 7), and after the second pair, Radlett had reached 233. Aston and James bowled overs 9-12, conceding only 19 between them, and picking up another wicket. 247 with 8 overs to go; from this point the target could have been anything from 260-320, so the remaining bowlers knew they had a job on their hands to contain the remaining two pairs. And what better way to do that than by taking wickets? Between William, Patrick, Alex and Neerav, 7 wickets fell in the final 8 overs, Patrick and Neerav both returning figures of two for 10. A final score of 272 (132 for 12) meant St Albans were in the hunt as they began padding up.
"Sensible" batting was the watchword as pads were donned. Neerav and Dexter opened up, starting brightly by running hard between the wickets, picking up singles with beautiful glances and cuts - 8 runs from the first over and suddenly the chase looked very possible. A couple of wickets slowed things down, and St Albans were 212 after 4 overs. Second pair Iolo and James strode to the crease, but both were dismissed in their first over, with no runs added. Suddenly, back to 202 after five and the chase looked anything but easy! After the shock of early dismissals, they knuckled down, and struck cleanly (and safely), taking the score on to 226 from 8 overs. Alex and Patrick were St Albans' third pair, and some excellent running and more clean hitting (particularly from Patrick who smooshed a couple of boundaries) moved the score on to 246 from 12 overs. Still 27 more required, and 8 overs to go, but at this point St Albans were in the box seat. Josh and Aston and they added a risk free 27 - Josh scoring 18. At 16 overs they had achieved their target, but with five runs deducted for each wicket, there was still an element of jeopardy as William and Dev came out to bat. William calmed any supporters' nerves by hitting his second ball for 4, and after over 18 the score had raced on to 296. A couple of dismissals in the 19th over kept things a little interesting, but over 20 saw another 10 runs added (William scoring 29 runs), and St Albans ended on 298.
A victory by 26 runs was not the only story - a mature performance by the boys; running well between the wickets, holding on to catches and bowling well. What more could a coach ask for! A competitive league this season, and we have held our own very well. 4 more matches to play, and hopefully more victories, and some more fun, to be had along the way!
