St Albans Cricket Club 6XI v Hemel Hempstead Town V on Sat 13 Aug 2022 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost By 16 runs
Match report
A 35-degree swelter on a bronze looking Sandpit Lane would have been the perfect day to win the toss and bat. Sadly, Hemel won the toss in the reverse fixture from last week. Tom Bentley fresh off the plane from Amsterdam and Jithin opened the bowling and restricted the Hemel openers early on. After riding the early pressure, the Hemel openers settled in and took the score past 50. Sri found the breakthrough thanks to a sharp catch by Tom Banks at midwicket. One brings two and Frank O’Leary found the second wicket drawing the edge and Tom Cocks behind the stumps taking a good catch. A third nearly came shortly after with Tom Cocks spring across to his right to grasp a fast-moving thick edge. Sadly, the ball just bouncing out when he hit the floor. With the score going past 100 the ever-chirpy Zach Tarrant got in on the act castling the Hemel number 3. Conditions were tough in the field Sri and Frank both took well deserved further wickets to restrict Hemel to 151 for 6 off their 35 overs.
In response Tom Cocks and Jithin opened for St Albans and soon made use of the lightning outfield. Jithin survived a close LBW and runout shout and responded creaming the ball through mid-on for a glorious boundary. Some questionable chat toward the square leg umpire from some of opposition resulted. A polite word from the St Albans skipper and some of the more senior members of the Hemel side saw the end to such chatter. The breakthrough soon came thanks to the first of three comical run outs with Cocks being dropped at cover and a run for the midfield backfiring badly. Pankaj came in at and after seeing off some good early deliveries fell victim to a seaming delivery that found off stump. Tom Cocks departed shortly after in similar fashion to Jithin, this time Qasim was dropped and Cocks running though for a quick single could not make his ground in time.
Qasim and Zach Tarrant came to the crease and Qasim soon found his range. Both found the boundary a number of times before Zach unluckily found a leading edge departing for 11. Qasim departed shortly after for a well-made 30 but not before he had dispatched the Hemel bowling to all parts of Sandpit Lane. Riley Curtis and Tom Banks were both unlucky to depart shortly after. Riley finding the middle of the bat glancing off his legs but also found a well-placed fielder. Tom fell victim of the third suicidal run out of the day, this time skipper Andy Melling to blame for calling him through for a second. With 7 wickets down and St Albans only just past the half way mark to their total victory looked a long way off. Andy and Sri however clawed St Albans back into the contest. Sri making the most of his new bat finding the gaps beautifully. Melling opted for a more aggressive approach taking St Albans to within 30 of victory at the final drinks break. Despite being spurred on by regular updates of Man Utd’s downfall at Brentford Melling fell shortly after for 23. With wickets not on their side the final two wickets fell cheaply and St Albans fell to an agonising 15 run loss in what was a close and enjoyable game of cricket.
