St Albans Cricket Club Won by 6 runs

Match report In St Albans' final league match of a very enjoyable, but not entirely successful season, the team arrived in good time for a pre-match net and plenty of 'leavers hoodies' and PGL chat. Skipper for the day Harry Newman won the toss and chose to field. Bowling in pairs in order to maximise consistency appeared to be a good choice, and some superb fielding helped to restrict Rickmansworth early on. The first pair added 16 without losing a wicket. Tight bowling from Jay and Aston kept the runs down, as the dangerous Agas struggled to get the ball away.. The second bowling pair (James and Josh) did an exceptional job, conceding only 6 runs in their set and taking a wicket. At the halfway stage Rickmansworth had scored 217...St Albans were smelling blood! Neerav and Harry took on bowling duties for overs 11-15, again keeping it tight by bowling good lines most of the time. Neerav took a wicket, and between the pair they only conceded 12...so going into the final pair Rickmansworth had 224 on the board. Atticus and William bowled the final 5, and Aahan in particular took a fancy to the bowling, scoring freely. A decent partnership took the final tally to 247. St Albans knew they'd have to bat sensibly to get there, and buoyed by the 'block the straight one' mantra, they padded up ready for a final chase. Aston and Jay started cautiously, and the score was 205 after 5 overs. Josh and James added 12, meaning that at halfway St Albans were on 217 - exactly as Rickmansworth had been an hour earlier - game very much still on. Harry and Neerav took to the field, and some expansive shots were displayed, with slightly mixed effect, as they scored 3 boundaries but lost 3 wickets...they progressed the score to 230. So, it all came down to William and Atticus - 18 required from 5 overs...runs from every ball of over 16 helped to calm the nerves - the equation down to 13 from 4. Disaster struck at the start of over 17, with Atticus run out, but a boundary counteracted that and it became 12 from the final 3. A steady over 17 that went for 3 runs meant there were less than 10 to get from the final two overs. The first ball of over 19 was a no ball which Atticus managed to dismiss to the leg side boundary...at the end of the 19th over the scores were tied. A wicket for Rickmansworth in the final over could change everything...two straight balls blocked by William at the start of the over showed there were some nerves, however he hit a beautiful shot for 4 off of the third ball, to rapturous applause from parents and team-mates alike. The fourth ball of the over caused a little bit of hearts in mouths as William was caught...luckily the standing umpire called a no ball as the delivery arrived above head height! Six ahead with one ball remaining, a win in the bag at last! St Albans players ran on to the pitch with big smiles on their faces, rounding off their season with a win!
