Match report It is rare that driving nearly 2 hours for a game of cricket can be worth it. However on Sunday, Uppingham CC proved that it can.

With all 11 players surprisingly turning up on time for an earlier start, St Albans went in to bat. With the captains plan of walshy and melling to open ruined due to Walsh saying he would score more runs lower down the order (we will get back to this), Andy Melling and Moksy went to the middle. However, both departed quicker than planned scoring 5 and 4 respectively.

Dulon and Wright formed a partnership before dulon was bowled. Hingston started strong and helped the team with a solid 15, the same number of runs Deb managed with both being caught. Wright retired on 50 but would be able to come back in should there be someone to stick around at the end.

Sam Davey batted quickly and effectively, playing some beautiful drives mixed with some aggressive shots over the top - 47 off just 31 balls was the innings of the match. Unfortunately for Sam, he tried to hit a 6 to bring up his 50 and they actually took the catch. Imran also quickly scoring 17 off 14.

Altaf uncharacteristically batted quite slowly for most his innings. During this time, Ciaran (if you needed a reminder of him wanting to score more runs lower down the order) got bowled first ball. Maybe just open next time Ciaran…
Saunders held an end before also being bowled which brought Wright back in to build on his 50. Despite padding up again and going to the middle, Altaf decided he didn’t want to see him bat again and nearly fell over his stumps first ball of the over, hit a 6 and then tried again to be caught. Always fun to pad and unpad without facing a ball!

Altaf clearly knew what was to come - tea. Uppingham put on a tea to be remembered. Ciaran decided to wash it down with a couple pints - not normally an issue but this may have been a contributing factor to him and Sam nearly having a boxing match at the end of the game. We will get to this.

St Albans knew they had the bowling to easily win this. After some proper bowling, Uppingham were left 64-8. Highlights of this spell of the game including both openers (Ciaran and Altaf) going at an economy of less than 2.5 each. Saunders targeting his mate and taking 2 wickets in 4 overs. Melling was brought on to even up the game mid way through this however decided that he was prime Graeme Swann, taking 2 for just 6 runs in 3 overs. Moksy bowled a 3 over spell of spin and pace (no one quite knew what he was going to bowl) but it was a tidy 3 over spell with 2 wickets.

This left St Albans so confident that Saunders mentioned to Wright that we could offer the oppo a t10 to give them something to do after we smash them. The captain had other ideas. Trying to even up the game, he brought himself on. The first over included more chances than one would think. This included: nearly taking leg stump first ball, altaf dropping a ball by pushing it up and over an electric fence (still unsure how this happened) and ciaran missing a catch as he wondered up from the boundary - this became a common theme of the innings. I did give myself a second over which proved a lack of judgement - my bad.

St Albans kept being sociable with the ball and Uppingham kept the score ticking. Dulon took the 9th with the oppo 138-9.

Eventually the captain decided to bring on some proper bowlers with Deb, Imran and Sam tasked with taking the final wicket. However the fielders had somewhat fallen asleep, including Walsh who despite repeated attempts from Sam to tell him to stand on the boundary, Ciaran decided he was better than him and stood a metre or two in front. This argument went back and forth for the majority of the end of the match.
Despite some good bowling, Uppingham had 2 batsman that were comfortably in and scoring freely which led to our defeat.

This was sub optimal and may have created some tension after the game.

Lesson is that Sunday cricket shouldn’t be sociable and now Salagundi Gardeners will feel the full force of the Sunday 2s in a few weeks (if the captain doesn’t get the sack after this one).

Despite the loss, Uppingham was an absolute pleasure to play at and were a great bunch of blokes. Everyone involved will look forward to hosting them at CP next year!!
