Reed II v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 28 Jul 2007 at 1.30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won

Match report Saints went to Reed looking for their fourth win on the bounce and duly obliged with a display of outstanding outfield cricket. Chris Ellins won his forth consecutive toss and chose to field. What followed was once of the best displays of bowling, fielding and wicket keeping by any Saints side in recent years.

Containing a strong Reed side bolstered by the presence of three first team regulars looked a tough task for a young St Albans attack on a beautiful batting track. However two superb opening spells by Hamaad Basir (40-2) and Charles Smith (50-4) removed three of the top four bats, two of which entered the match with seasons averages well above 100.

Fleming (39-0) and Ellins (17-2) supported by magnificent ground fielding continued the good work restricting the flow of runs. However just as the Reed middle order looked to impose themselves Charles Smith’s and Hamaa Basir returned to the attack to take two more wickets in two overs. At 125 for 7 Andy Walker joined in (18-1) to frustrate the lower order and although the last wicket proved valuable for Reed, adding 32 runs, taking ten wickets for 174 on a 250 track was cricket of the highest order.

In reply Ed Hughes (10) and Mick Malouf (48) opened steadily. Hughes departure slashing at a wide half volley brought Michael Goodfellow (37) to the crease and what followed was a display of great maturity and stroke play that moved the game firmly into Saint’s hands. However just as Saints victory looked a foregone conclusion Mick Malouf’s premature departure sparked a middle order wobble. Hugo Thomas (8), Stuart Wilder (16), Chris Ellins (5) all got starts and then got out, and Jamie Fleming, hero of Flitwick the previous week, got a first ball snorter.

Thankfully Michael Eames and Andy Walker steadied the ship and brought us home. With just three balls and few finger nails remaining Eames stroked the winning runs backward of square to return a handsome 30 points.

Four wins on the trot and a sniff of promotion have made selection an interesting process. If this dizzy standard of cricket can be maintained for the remainder of the season then it is difficult to see how any side in Division 7 can prevent their upward march. There’s a gauntlet thrown…..
