St Albans Cricket Club 3XI v Abbots Langley II on Sat 11 May 2013 at 1:00 pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report A wet and windswept Verulam School ground hosted this fine match between Saints IIIs and Abbots Langley IIs.

Being asked to bat first, Saints lost their twin Tobys within four balls of the match starting, handing the momentum to the visitors. Fortunately Nisar (27) and Kanchwala put this aside and restored a little more balance. A cluster of wickets left the score at 52/5, and a significantly sub-par total looked likely. Captain Eames however gathered his troops and compiled a typically hard-struck 56, while those around him played their part, leading to partnerships of 27, 30, 33 and 26 for the last four wickets, against a slightly puzzling choice of bowlers and field settings. A man short, Saints had reached 168, all out in the 51st over.

Abbots had noted a wicket with unpredictable bounce, and chose to play straight early on, accumulating runs comfortably enough without getting away, broken only by an outstanding catch by Kanchwala. The dark clouds that had threatened through the day then brought two disruptions of play, reducing the available overs to 41, but leaving the outfield wet and the ball slippery. Eames was forced to reconsider his bowling options and turned back to Humphries and Furnival, while Abbots wisely upped their run rate. Wickets finally started falling with some regularity. On his first known venture to the bowling crease for St Albans, Furnival repeatedly beat the bat, using the wicket well and deserved better than the statistics show. Humphries persisted in a good line and was rewarded with the very fine figures of 6/39. However, it was now the turn of Abbots skipper Handoll to marshall his forces, and his undefeated knock of 39 guided his team home in the 37th over, even as his less experienced teammates kept Saints in the game.

Thus Abbots Langley won this by just two wickets, and beat a match-ending shower by just five minutes. Regardless, Saints should take a lot of credit from this match. Going in a man down, and with the worst of the conditions, the team battled as one to the end, showing determination with the bat, fire with the ball, and another perfect display in the field.

After two matches, 42 points leaves Saints in 4th on the League ladder, and - encouraged by both commitment and performances - looking forward to a successful 2013 campaign.
