Potters Bar III v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 23 May 2015 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 2 wickets

Match report Undefeated St Albans travelled to undefeated Potters Bar in this third round clash in Division 8A.

The day started with unexpected light rain, leaving neither skipper a clear decision at the toss. In the end, Eames, with his third straight win at the toss, elected to bat first, confident with a strong line-up.

Jadhav showed some hints of his talent, but was out early and Curtis, rediscovering his bat, didn't last long. However Regan and Crisp settled, working the ball nicely. The persisting rain made for less than ideal cricket conditions for either side, the ball slowing up in the wet outfield to tighten up the scoring rates. Despite the wet ball, the Potters Bar bowlers admirably maintained good control.

After a comfortable partnership of 49, Regan (31) and Crisp (25) both departed, and soon Saints were at 93-6 in the 34th overs. For the second week in a row, O'Toole and Hiscock compiled a useful partnership to lift the total, O'Toole taking the batting honours with 39. A few scrambles took Saints to a 50 over total of 157-9, which looked 15-20 runs short of a good total.

Conditions had improved by the time Potters Bar came out to bat, but Adshead and Everdell bowled testing spells to begin with. Adshead - 24-2 - gained early wickets, and the home side had crept to 8-2 after 8 overs.

The most significant stretch of the game then followed. Lewis, and particularly Sharma, advanced the game swiftly from this difficult position, to add 86 runs at nearly six an over. Walker's arrival at the bowling crease saw the demise of Sharma and Lewis, and the match tightened up. O'Toole and Everdell kept things tight, and at 136-8 after 43.4 overs, there was much to play for. Finally the experience of Pett combined with Festa (25no) was good enough to give Potters Bar victory in the 49th over.

In a game of fine margins Saints may have been slightly unfortunate with the rub of the green, but this was a well contested one day match, benefiting from the new League format.

Saints took 12 bonus points from this match, a decent return, which helps them keep pace with the leaders in the League after three matches.
