Match report On a bright afternoon in St Albans, the IIIs endured a dark defeat to Hertford, slipping from top of the ladder as a result.

The batting was to blame, the team capitulating for a meagre 69, falling well short of the target of 148. Saints were in early trouble at 4/17, Benham having taken all four wickets, before M. Telkman (23) and Hall united. These two showed that runs could be scored, suggesting the match was not over. But after compling a partnership of 32, Hall injudiciously left a ball to be bowled and the rot really set in, with the last six wickets falling for just 20. Credit must go to Benham, whose full, accurate bowling yielded 4/12 in his ten overs, with seven maidens amongst them, and to off spinner Codd (5.3/1/8/5). However, there was a multitude of sins committed by the Saints batsmen, and they will need to do better.

At the half way stage this ignominious failure hadn't looked likely, as Saints kept the visitors to 147 in this 50 over fixture. An early wicket was then followed by a solid partnership of 72, and another one was developing when Walker's direct hit from backward square ran out Riddle. From 2/101 after 27 overs, Saints clawed their way back into the game with some tighter bowling that was able to take advantage of seam movement on a wicket drying after two days of persistent rain. Walker - a late call up for injured skipper Eames - finished with 3/13 in 9 overs to take the bowling honours, but all the bowlers should have been satisfied with their efforts in keeping Hertford to a manageable score.

148 to win may have looked gettable, but the batting effort conspired to prove otherwise with its lamentable tally of 69. Three games to go; as skipper Telkman advised, let's put this one behind us and move on.
