Hitchin I v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 19 Aug 2017 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 11 runs

Match report St Albans travelled up to a windswept Hitchin in search of a return to winning ways. The toss was lost and St Albans were inserted to bat.

The innings started badly as White and Chanda were both dismissed cheaply with only 4 on the board as the Hitchin captain Khalid who opened the bowling with his off spin made early in roads. Mabuza joined Hall at the crease and they went about rebuilding the innings with Mabuza hitting some crunching driven fours before being adjudged LBW for 20. Wickets started to tumble to the accurate Moore (3-21). Hall was bowled shouldering arms, O’Toole jnr was well yorked and Capaldi was bowled by one that seamed sharply off the pitch. Goodfellow was the only one in the middle order who offered resistance and when he was bowled and Caley was out without scoring St Albans were 77-8. However, Winfield with 31 was able to give St Albans something to
bowl at. His innings was full of good running and crisp sweeps. He was last out trying to repeat the shot the ball before where he managed to hit a monster six with the ball ending up in the neighbouring field. He was well supported by both Foster and Rosson which saw St Albans set Hitchin an under par 115 to win.

St Albans came out firing knowing that early wickets would be crucial. White took a wicket in his first over but a 44 run partnership for the second wicket calmed Hitchin’s nerves. However, Mabuza (4-32) came on and a good short leg catch by Goodfellow saw another wicket and shortly after White took a sharp slip catch off Rosson (1-20). Despite wickets falling Hitchin saw aggression to be the approach of the day and Fair (47) took the attack to St Albans and when he was dismissed by Mabuza at 85-4 the game looked all but won for Hitchin with only 30 runs needed. St Albans kept chipping away with regular wickets from the bowling of Mabuza and Foster (1-29) who both turned the ball sharply. It was left too White (4-14) to clean up the lower order with some accurate bowling to leave Hitchin 101runs short and St Albans with a dramatic win.

Next week sees the visit of Radlett where St Albans will look to finish off the season strongly.
