Clifton II v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 31 Jul 2004 at 1.30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Won St Albans win by 6 wickets

Match report Captain, Jerry Fretter won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Clifton into bat, on a green top pitch. Zaman and James opened, and managed to kept it tight. The bowling was backed up by some good fielding. James had a smart, leg-side, stumping taken by Jerry Fretter, who dismissed his opposite captain, for just 1. He was also denied a similar dismissal several balls later, as the umpire stated that he couldn't see ! Zaman and James continued to apply pressure and both took wickets to leave Clifton at 36/6. It was the inspired change of Tim Fretter into the attack that saw the Clifton innings wrapped up when he came on and bowled just 9 balls, taking 4 wickets for 0 runs!!

Clifton were all out for just 81 off 34.3 overs, giving St Albans 65 overs to score the runs.

Due to the quick innings of Clifton, the tea, between innings, was not ready and St Albans had to bat for 12 overs.

Tim Fretter could not produce the same result with the bat, as he did with the ball, as he was caught behind, off the first ball of the innings. Marriott and Nisar soon followed before the tea break.

St Albans were 45/3 off 12 overs at tea.

Pat Sylvester, is probably hanging himself, as having seen the team to the brink of victory, and a Not Out, he hit a really long hop, (yes, it was that long) back to the bowler to leave St Albans 56/4. However, the batting line-up was quite strong and it was left to Rex Devadason (18no) and Andy (The Clock) Walker (27no) to see St Albans home by 6 wickets with over 45 overs left.

The dream team moment was when Rex Devadason effected a run out by 22 yards, as both batsmen stood at the same end. They obviously had not see Rex field before, as there was very nearly two runs available, as Rex's little legs worked overtime to get to the ball... It does help that both batsmen run, as their number 4 just leant on his bat, as his partner charged down the wicket. Even with 22 yards to spare, he very nearly managed to clear the keeper with the ball.

Skipper, Jerry Fretter, was in a happy mood after the game, and stated that the fielding and bowling was 'the best, alround team effort this season.' He continued by saying the the team is an 11 man game and each player played their part, even Charles Smith !!"
