Potten End v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 07 Jul 2018 at 11am
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Saints IIIs had another tough day in Division 8A, as league leaders Potten End mercilessly continued their winning streak.

With the fixture’s start time brought forward two hours to accommodate a long tea break, there were a few tardy arrivals at Potten End, where the recent weeks of sun had baked the outfield dry.

Telkman lost the toss and was asked to bat first, not the ideal result. Seemingly within the blink of an eye - four overs - Saints had slumped to 3/5, with the top order unable to resist a lively bowling attack that was able to take advantage of a wicket with variable bounce. Nick Ralfe showed confidence and offered brief respite in partnership with Rich Baylis.

Once again Baylis had arrived at the wicket in a time of crisis, finding himself tasked with generating a recovery, never the ideal situation for a number five batsman. Lamentably, wickets kept falling at the other end, and although the wicket continued to play tricks, none of the batters could really blame their downfall on the vagaries of the pitch. Perhaps the one exception was Baylis, unfortunately playing on a delivery he had positioned to leave, having struck a hard-worked 37, a class above his teammates.

At least a total of 83 was something of an improvement over the 41 scored in the first round of fixtures against the same opponents.

With just 28 overs bowled, it was too early for tea, and so a swift turn around took place. Price secured a wicket in her first over - very welcome, as it brought a first bonus point for the day - before splitting the webbing in her hand and departing the scene. Murphy bowled well and Walker burgled a second wicket for the IIIs, but the confident hosts never looked in the slightest trouble.

Indeed the only question was whether the anticipated result could be delivered before 3pm, the scheduled tea break. With an eight wicket victory achieved by Potten End, players left the field to the strains of the national anthem, almost perfect timing, with a fixture of more national significance about to commence in Russia.

There was an air of humiliation as Saints quietly made their own sandwiches for tea, with the television tuned to follow England’s progress in Samara. As the half time whistle rang, we beat a hasty retreat, scurrying back to St Albans, where England’s quarter final victory could be enjoyed, the meagre demise in Potten End set to one side. As with England's footballers, there will be more important fixtures to come.
