St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 5 wkts

Match report A game of 2 catches!
Calling correctly the opposition skipper did not hesitate to put St Albans in to bat on the wet pitch at Sandpit Lane. Openers Manny Nisar (7), and Andy Knill-Jones (23), started cautiously on the sticky track, and St Albans had a solid platform at 50-1 after 16 overs. Incoming batsmen found it hard to settle on the tricky pitch and 3 quick wickets fell. But Kevin Ralfe and Wilf Rush patiently rebuilt the innings. Kevin (60*) pacing his innings superbly to accelerate the scoring towards the end of the 40 overs, supported by cameos by Sachin Patel (21) and Oscar Reeves (14*). St Albans finishing on a competitive 157-6.
St Albans applied the pressure right from the start. Sachin Patel and Oscar Reeves bowling with good lines and pace, and the fielding was tight. After 5 overs the Exiles had scored 2 runs, a great LBW shout was turned down, and then a clear catch behind, but umpire and batsmen were unmoved. The openers then decided to make the most of their second chances, and were looking comfortable at 101-0 after 21 overs. All 4 seamers extracting some uneven bounce from the pitch but no chances going to hand.
The introduction of spin finally made the breakthrough. A heave across the line to mid-on, Toby Crisp sprinting in, but the ball appeared to be falling short, a dive forward and the ball was plucked one handed inches from the ground. The catch of the season! The opener out for the second time, but had made 65 runs in the interim. Faz Nisar (8-39-2) and Sammy Kumar (8-25-3) bowled excellently in tandem. Whilst Exiles were on a Nelson (111) Sammy took 3 wickets for 0 runs in 17 balls. The pressure was building, but with 6 wickets in hand and only 47 runs needed the Exiles decided that the best way to get over the target was to score quickly. This they did, but Faz managed to pick up another wicket in the 32 over, but the Exiles finished the game with 2 maximums.
St Albans played really well in all departments, and on another day the result could have been very different. Plenty of positives to take into the final games of the season.
