Match report A youthful 4XI ran out against a strong Old Haberdashers side having already secured league safety this season. Skipper Andy Saunders won the toss and opted to bat, mainly to stop Manny Nisar moaning, and sent Manny and young Sachin Patel out to open for St Albans.

A slow and tricky pitch coupled with some excellent Old Habs’ bowling and fielding made for painfully slow going with both batsman struggling to get the ball away and the first 15 overs only yielding 27 runs for the loss of Manny (5) and James Lawrence (2).

Sachin stuck at it doggedly though, ignoring the chirpy opposition, and frustratingly hitting lots of decent shots straight to fielders.

Faz Nisar’s introduction saw the run rate increase and he registered a decent 20 before departing but that precipitated a long run of single figure scores before the innings finished on 122 -9. There were some positives to be taken from at least batting out the overs.

Sachin’s dogged 46 was noteworthy as it was an innings of concentration and determination from a young player with a bright future.

After a passable tea in a clubhouse in the middle of a renovation Saints took to the field.

Having been talked into opening the bowling Andy Saunders’ left arm filth, coupled with the sneaky in-duckers of Nadeem Arif kept the opening bowlers honest for a time but with such a low total to defend and aggressive batsmen at the crease it was always going to be difficult to contain the run rate for long.

Nadeem’s two wickets were well deserved but they were the only ones bagged and though Bilal Siddique bowled well for his short spell it wasn’t long before the batsmen were freeing their arms and accelerating towards the low target, eventually reaching it after only 22 overs.

An end of season ‘dead rubber’ then that came at the end of a mixed campaign that saw the 4s achieve safety for another season amid some very good wins, all of which augurs well for 2019.
