Abbots Langley I v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 14 Jul 2018 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Won by 2 runs

Match report After another scorching week leaving a very dry pitch at Abbots Captain Capaldi won his eighth straight toss and had no hesitation in deciding to have a bat.

As with last week the St Albans innings got off to a fast start with Abbots opener Roache seeing 30 taken from his 3 over opening spell. Hounslow punished any width and Capaldi slapped the ball effectively to bring up a 50 partnership in the 8th despite variable bounce and large amounts of spin on show. After benefiting from a couple of dropped catches Capaldi was finally dismissed for 69 but a solid 124 run partnership for the first wicket had set St Albans up for a decent score.

However, the all too familiar St Albans Achilles heel was shown as all 10 wickets were lost for 91 runs. This is something that urgently needs to be address for the rest of the season. Hounslow departed for 41 before Coulman (15) and Regan (16) looked good before picking out fielders. Some poor running saw a couple of run outs and it was left to a bludgeoning innings from Armitage (36) including four sixes which saw St Albans bowled out for 215. A very defendable score but 40 or so runs light from what the total should have been.

The Abbots innings started off with some surprisingly tight bowling from the shaven eye browed Winfield (1-24) and Telkman (0-29). Both we unlucky not to find a breakthrough as the opening batmen put on 52 runs for the first wicket. The introduction of off spin from O’Toole (2-49) and Capaldi (2-45) saw wickets taken and leave Abbots on 77-3. However, the Australian overseas looked to be settling in but a change in bowling saw Rosson (3-28) get him with his second ball of the day and then a couple of overs later saw a catch taken by Kendal up to the stumps.

At the second drinks break Abbots were on 158-5 with 16 overs remaining and both sides in with a chance. Regan (2-23) was bought on for the first time and despite leaking some boundaries took a couple of wickets one aided by a stunning catch by Mark ‘Magnet’ Telkman who in an effort of self-preservation saw the ball stick in his right hand. At 182-7 St Albans really thought they were in with a good chance. O’Toole was bought back into the attack and beat the bat numerous times with big spinning balls but Abbots crept up to 204-7 leaving them perhaps favourites. However, with the penultimate ball of his spell O’Toole encouraged a rash shot which was caught by Rosson. This was followed up by a returning Winfield bowling the number 10 batman leaving 9 runs needed from 3 overs with the last pair at the crease.

This came down to 3 runs needed off the last over to be bowled from Rosson. He rose to the occasion finishing off with a wicket maiden with the batsman only being able to sky the last ball of the over to Hounslow leaving jubilant celebration from all the players.

A good win but a game made much harder by a poor ground fielding effort where 25 – 30 runs were given away. How much easier would it have been with more application shown with the bat and in the field?! The next three games against the three teams below St Albans in the table will be crucial in deciding the outcome of the season.
