Haringey Libraries CC v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 2nd XI on Sun 05 Aug 2018 at 1:30pm
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 1 run

Match report The Sunday 2’s led by stand in skipper Manny travelled to Enfield with a mix of youth and (some) experienced resources, picking up what ended up being a 12th man on route!

As the coin went up on a sun soaked, well worn, day 2 wicket at the bottom of the Holtwhites ground, Manny called incorrectly and Saints were asked to spend a maximum of 35 overs of the afternoon in the field without hesitation.

Altaf and Bilal opened the bowling but failed to extract the much needed early breakthrough. On a flatish wicket the opening batsmen managed to find the short boundaries regularly and set out to punish any loose deliveries, losing countless balls throughout the day.

With plenty of bowling options available the skipper called upon almost all at some point with George Sims finally removing the Opener in the 21st over on 80. Sims was the pick of the bowlers conceding just 8 runs in an excellent spell of 5 overs. George’s wicket came from a great one handed take behind from George Pelham who deserves a big shout out for stepping up to perform wicket keeping duties!

With 10 overs to go, the score on 136, Saints began to think about spin at both ends in a bid to pick up wickets as the opposition looked to push for a big total, and so it was Charlie with his leg spin that struck first with George stumping their number 2 on 51. However from then on the batsmen accelerated hard taking their team to a formidable 270!

With a strong middle order line up St Albans opened batting with Peter Church and Wilf Rush who formed a solid partnership at the top with Peter enjoying pace on the ball and crashing anything loose to the fence before falling with the score on 51 in the 10th over. Wilf was not phased by the loss of his opening partner and continued his classy knock of 54 scoring all around the ground, with the hard hitting Najib also having fun at the other end reaching his 50 in no time. Manny came in at 4 and made a quick fire 21 before Najib’s innings was cut short again by a suspect lbw decision, and Manny fell shortly afterwards running himself out looking for a quick single from brother Faz. Then came what was to be the fireworks of St Albans innings with Faz (53 not out) and Charlie Parkinson (43 not out) smashing St Albans almost to an unbelievable victory! Charlie hit the last ball for 6 among cries of no ball from the sideline for what looked a waist high full toss. It was not to be but a fantastic effort to come within 2 runs of victory!
