Chorleywood 1st XI v St Albans Cricket Club 1XI on Sat 21 Apr 2018 at 13.00
St Albans Cricket Club Won By one wicket
Match report
St Albans kicked off the 2018 season with a trip to Division 1 side Chorleywood and upon losing the toss St Albans were in the field first.
There were tight opening spells from Winfield and White as the bat was beaten numerous times but no chances were offered and the run rate remained low. First change saw an introduction for debutant Tyler Griffen (1-9) who found a good line and length and managed to induce an edge from one of the openers where a good catch was taken by White at slip. At the other end Vijender (0-24) was bowling his usual nagging line and was unfortunate to go wicketless on the day.
The introduction of spin in the form of Foster changed the dynamic of the innings. Using all of his experience he took apart the Chorleywood middle order with figures off 4-28. Rosson (1-24) in tandem with Foster settled into his spell and saw a good catch taken by Goddard at backward point to open his account for the year.
Once these spells had finished it signalled the Chorleywood batsmen to open their shoulders and start to hit out as the short boundary started to be peppered. The return of Winfield (1-35) and White (1-35) at the end of the innings saw the run slow again as wickets fell. At the end of this good bowling display St Albans were set 214 for victory.
The St Albans batting innings runs saw runs flow despite wickets fallings and were in a precarious position at 37-3. However, momentum was wrestled back through Howeson (30) and another debutant Armitage (32). Howeson timed the ball sweetly hitting the first six of the year with a crisp checked drive. Armitage punished all of the bowlers and hit the ball with real power. St Albans still looked to be a long way off when they were both dismissed at 107-6 with over one hundred runs still to get. Capaldi (37) and Winfield (21) managed to continue the momentum not letting the Chorleywood bowlers settle and looked to be taking the game home.
Chorelywood had other ideas and quick wickets were taken leaving the last pair of Vijender (25*) and Rosson (14*) with 38 runs to win. With every ball faced they both looked more assured with Vijender caressing one through the covers for a boundary and Rosson timing the ball over mid off. It was left to Vijender in the fading light to finish it with the shot of the day smashing the bowler back over his head for six.
St Albans will look to take the momentum gained from this win into next week when they face Aylesbury Town.
