St Albans Cricket Club 5XI v Northampton Exiles IV on Sat 10 Aug 2019 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 88 runs

Match report A youthful St Albans Club XI welcomed Northampton Exiles to Sandpit Lane on a very blustery afternoon.

The Exiles won the toss and elected to bat, making a brisk start despite the best efforts of Tom and Aidan who opened the bowling for Saints. With Oscar and Shan taking over the bowling duties, Saints started to get the scoring rate back under control and, more importantly, picked up three valuable wickets. Louis, Zach and Ibraheem bowled steadily after the drinks break picking up a couple more wickets between them. However, the Exiles skipper, who had opened the batting, continued to accumulate runs steadily and soon reached his half-century. The introduction of Siva into the bowling attack generated chances a plenty but nothing went to hand. Instead, it was James from the other end who picked up two further wickets, including the prize wicket of the Exiles skipper who had by that stage reached 92. A special mention to Reuben, who kept wicket very tidily throughout the innings and picked up two good catches.

The Exiles total of 234 looked imposing, but with short boundaries ensuring good value for your shots, Saints knew they would be in with a chance if they could make it to drinks in touch with the run rate and with wickets in hand. Openers Zach and Siva made a bright start and Saints reached 30 without loss in the 6th over, however, when the Exiles opening bowler snaffled a sharp return catch from Siva, the run rate started to slow with only 18 runs coming from the next 5 overs. Zach and Oscar rotated the strike well, patiently building a partnership of 42 until Oscar was run out. John and Shan were dismissed in short order, both adjudged LBW, leaving St Albans in a perilous 99-4 when the rain came. After a short interlude, play resumed and two more wickets fell before the rain returned. Once play restarted, Zach reached a well deserved fifty, but was soon out leaving St Albans 7 down with just 114 on the board. Tom hit a towering six with his new bat, but he and Reuben departed quickly, leaving Ibraheem and Louis as the final pair. Some sensible batting took the score past 140, but Saints' hopes were ended when Ibrahem was run out - the third of the innings.

Despite the weather and the result. it was an enjoyable game that was played in good spirits and with plenty of plus points for St Albans' young team.
