Walthamstow v St Albans Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI on Sun 07 Jul 2002 at 2:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost Lost by 2 wickets

Match report The St Albans side came away with a loss, although either side have won the match.
St Albans won the toss and elected to open on a damp/wet green pitch. A solid start was undone when Josh Holt played on for 10. He was quickly followed by Richard Little who was also bowled. Jake Holt, playing his first english game of cricket looked sound until he edged behind.

The score went from 46-1 to 46-5 as Raza, Jones and Egan all fell without changing the score. Box attempted some big hits but was bowled for 14. Fretter J and Nadeem set about to stay at the crease and score the odd run. They took the score into the 80's before Fretter J was given out LBW for 13. Nadeem then opened his shoulder and also edged a few runs through the slips. A late burst from Simon Fretter (19no) and Afroz (15) took the score to 142 from just 35 overs.

The St Albans side scored an immediate success as Afroz found an edge to the keeper and this was quickly followed by Simon Fretter who also found the edge to the keeper. Fretter was almost unplayable at times and bowled 6 overs for just 6 runs.

Wickets continued to fall and the Walthamstow side appeared to have stopped going for shots.

The game took a nasty turn when the Walthamstow batsman clearly middled the ball to short leg. He did not walk and there was no response from the player/umpire. This was just cheating, and he was told so in no uncertain terms.

A run out ( about 2 feet out) was also not given and these were to be important decisions that were not given. Things didn't help when the same batsmen, who went onto score 58, was dropped at the wicket off Box.

Eventually this bat sliced to point and was caught by Fretter S. He was shown which way he should be going... ( especially with 4 Aussies in your team......??!!)

A late flurry of wickets saw the Walthamstow side need 1 runs from the final over with 3 wickets left. With Afroz bowling, he took a wicket with the first ball but they then scambled a quick single. A direct hit would have seen another wicket, but it missed by inches.

A close result, which was ruined by the cheating opposition. This was even more bourne out when it was noticed that they played a bowler who did not appear in the batting order ??!! It appears that they played 12 players and changed the side halfway through the match. The umpire who also failed to give the decisions, also fielded, but again did not bat and was on the field at the end with 1 wicket left ??!!
