This year’s President’s Day fixture got off to an electric start, with guest umpire Nick Hall gleefully alerting his colleague Ben Killner of a no ball for three fielders behind square on the leg side. From there, the fireworks continued throughout the President’s XI innings, with only the odd shower delaying a fast scoring first innings as Club XI captain Jacob Winfield continued to set McCullum-esque attacking fields. Nisar (17), West (15), Crisp (19), and Sims (53) all played impressive strokes against the menacing 1st XI bowling attack of May and Regan. With Regan collecting two wickets for his efforts, the ever competitive May was noticeably bemused with his lack of returns, especially after Lawrence failed to take a simple catch at short leg off his bowling, thus ruining the masterplan that had been devised at 2am the previous evening. President’s Day gun Nick Ralfe (74) batted with the typical skill and power that he seems to be able to summon in this particular fixture, declaring “this is my day” as he left the field, surely to Mardelli’s disdain.

Another heavy shower brought about an early tea, with players and dignitaries being treated to curries and wraps courtesy of Tavah. With many players having indulged in seconds, the post-tea session as the President’s XI attempted to get to a declaration-worthy total was noticeably pedestrian. With the score 226-5 and with presidential approval secured, captain Hall took great joy in waving in his players from the Clarence Park balcony.

The Club XI response got off to a flyer, with Perrin (34) repeatedly slogging Tim Winfield and reluctantly forcing Hall to adopt a leg-side field more suitable for Larwood than Winfield. With the score 48-0 off 10, short-run Adshead (6-2-10-4) took four quick wickets of Wilton, Perrin, Thomas, and Murray to put the President’s XI in a commanding position. A special note must go to Tim Winfield for a spectacular catch to dismiss Hugo, moving like a Jaguar to his right before clasping onto a well struck shot with a full length dive.

After Jamie Telkman settled into a typically commendable Sunday bowling performance, skipper Hall turned to the opening duo of Nisar and West to bowl, this request causing a great deal of confusion for Manny. Having overheard his skipper’s description of him as declaration bowling, West clearly had a point to prove, clean bowling Lawrence and then providing one of the moments of the day by bouncing out Regan.

May (71*) hit the ball very cleanly to bring some hope to the Club XI’s cause, but with the required run rate ever climbing and the wicket of Murphy (at the hands of Winfield for the fourth year on the bounce), the chances were slim. Nonetheless, with shots such as a lofted off-drive for six to win the Abbey Aquatics Shot of the Day, May continued to believe, and with the President’s XI still requiring two wickets for victory, it was shaping up to a tense finale with all three outcomes in play. Sims struck to crucially remove number 10 Swan, before golden arm West was now brought back into the attack in the penultimate over with wickets in mind. Having deceived May with a well-executed slower ball, Winfield contrived to drop a steepler to take the game to the final over.

After doing nothing all day, skipper Hall decided to try and claim glory by bringing himself onto bowl. Even with nearly 30 to win, the bowling was so underwhelming that May continued to attack, leading to an extraordinary last ball of the match. Having skipped down the wicket and hit the ball to Adshead at mid-off, May called Winfield through for a run, the latter understandably stood on his bat at this point. With a clean pick up and accurate throw from match winner Adshead, Crisp took his first clean catch of the day to leave a scrambling Winfield a yard short of his ground and give the President’s XI a well deserved 25 run victory. Peter celebrated the victory by extravagantly presenting the President’s Day trophy to himself, arms aloft and with the jubilation that one would expect after such a thrilling finale.
