Old Minchendenians v St Albans Cricket Club 3XI on Sat 07 May 2022 at 14:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 50 runs

Match report St Albans IIIs suffered a disappointing opening to the 2022 season in their trip to north London.

Newly promoted Old Minchendenians were the hosts at a council maintained ground, with the pitches having an unusual concave appearance to them. Later we learned that the council refuses to water the square, cricket facility maintenance not high on their priorities.

The home side won the toss and chose to bat, which suited Saints.

Winfield (2/19) secured the first wicket of the season, and then a second, with Law at mid off tumbling forward to complete a good catch. The pitch was starting to show its true nature with some uneven bounce.

Opener Pillai was wielding the willow in a positive fashion and had smacked 44 out of the first 50 runs, before the introduction of Davey sent him back to the sheds. At the other end, newcomer Speller got into his task to complete eight tidy overs.

Davey was discovering that bowling wicket-to-wicket brought rewards - cricket is a simple game after all - on his way to capturing five victims that wrecked Old Minch’s middle order. Murphy then joined in the action, generously offering a gentle full toss to Narisetti, who, with equal generosity, swung in the air to the safe hands of Church. Shortly after Murphy finished the innings with the tidy figures of 3/0.

With just two extras conceded, some good catching, and vigorous outfielding, the bowling had been well supported in the field. Davey’s 5/29 was the pick of the bowlers as the hosts could tally just 102. Saints went to the tea break full of confidence.

Within six overs that confidence had been shattered, as the top order faltered in the face of some accurate bowling, and with uncertainty caused by the variable bounce. The home team clearly knew how to operate on this wicket. St Albans were 4/10.

The combination of Caley and Church then showed more determination than their predecessors, watching the ball off the wicket, and thwarting the surging bowlers. A low target never feels too far away. Unfortunately this patient stand was broken at 25. From there, no batsman could sustain an innings through the pressure. Saints all out 52.

A 50 run loss was a bitter disappointment. In hindsight, perhaps Old Minch’s swaggering approach to batting was the best way to play on this substandard pitch. That said, the bowling and fielding performance was excellent, and Saints should look forward to the return fixture, and in the more immediate term, the next game, against Old Cholmeleians.

Saints’ player of the match - Sam Davey.
