St Albans Cricket Club 4XI v Langlebury IV on Sat 13 Jul 2002 at 1:30
St Albans Cricket Club Won Win by 64 runs (SACC 30 pts Langleybury 5 pts)20

Match report For the second week running, Captain Ade Hallchurch lost the toss and was asked to bat first. (Perhaps his job is now on the line, 2 losses in a row!!)

With Pat Sylvester opening with Nadeem the St Albans side started at 5 a over and progressed the score past 50 without any trouble. Although Pat was under the weather, he held until l he missed a straight ball and was bowled for 20. David Coombes came in and attempted to blast the ball to all parts, but quickly fell for 11. The normally reliable Richard Williams lost his head, and his middle stump as he was bowled for just 6. The promising start was now in danger of causing problems. Things were not helped when Nadeem mis hit a big shot to long on having scored his 50. He was quickly followed by Tim Frette(8)r who was bowled around his legs and Ade Hallchurch failed to trouble the scorer when he fell leg before.

At 105-6 both Guy Black and Jerry Fretter played the ball into the gaps and took every run possible. The occasional big hit was despatched to the boundary. When Guy Black fell for 34 the score had pushed onto 165.

Jerry Fretter(22no) attempted to play out the remaining overs and scored at a run ball, but 9,10,11 fell for just 3 runs between them and the St Albans score finished on 174 (6 points) off 47.5 overs

At least they had a score to bowl at, which didn't look likely at one point. Uzman Zaman fresh from his 7-7 continued to make life hard for the Langleybury batsmen. Tim Fretter was sharp and had both openers in trouble. A good stumping by J Fretter off Tim seemed to have made the break through. However, despite being at least 12" out of his crease, even after the appeal, the umpire saw fit not to give it out.

In the next over they were rewarded when the same umpire then opened his account with an LBW which was missing leg stump by the same marigin as the stumping. (what goes around, come around).

Several wickets then fell in quick sucession, as Uzman found his line and length. Langleybury were now 36-4 but with still 35 overs left. Several bowling changes attempted to prise the stubborn batsmen out. Guy Black finally gained the opening with a smart caught and bowled. This opened the door when Barrett (ex St Albans) was run out by half a pitch attempting to take two runs to the arm of Tim Fretter, the writing looked on the wall. Tim's bullet arm saw the ball over the top of the stumps giving his Dad little work to take the bails off. Despite some lusty blows from the Langleybury captain, Adam Banjee took two wickets in 7 balls as he hit middle stump on both occasions.

St Albans were on top and it seemed a matter of time before they wrapped up the win they deserved. The blocking tactics by the Langleybury lower order failed when Uzman returned and took his 4th wicket. Langleybury were now 109-9 with still 7 overs remaining.

The win was wrapped up when again the Langleybury number 11 adopted suicide mode as he attempted to take on Tim Fretter's arm. Having seen the previous attempt it did take much to know that they were going to be in trouble, and so it proved when the flat missile went into the gloves and the Langleybury bat was stranded about 3 yards out.

A great team performance, if a little sloppy and slow in the field, saw the St Albans side take the maximum 30 points. However a win by Harpenden keeps the gap at 27 points. A win next week against lowly Bushey is very important to maintain top spot until the end of the season.
