Bamville v St Albans Cricket Club 4XI on Sat 20 Jul 2024 at 13:00
St Albans Cricket Club Lost
Match report
“Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this Spirit causes injury to the game itself” – MCC
Saturday 20th of July sent a St Albans 4th XI side, short of injured skipper Saunders and last week’s hero Khan, to face Bamville in the idyllic settings of Napsbury Park. The pitch looked green but hard, and with this skipper Winfield elected to bat first and set a total. What followed was a 30 minute downpour, which on a ground that lacked any form of covers clearly threw a spanner in the works. Dean and Nisar opened the batting, approaching with caution and looking to accrue runs slowly before drinks. They did this successfully, rarely scoring boundaries but taking singles and twos where available. They would nearly reach drinks when Nisar was adjudged to be run out, a decision that was slightly dubious due to the square leg umpire being unsighted to the actual crease.
Drinks would come with the score at around 50-1, with the middle order tasked with getting us to a defendable total of around 130-150. This became harder when Dean was unfortunately bowled by the first change spinner, who bowled well throughout the middle overs. This brought about a deluge of St Albans wickets, with Ahmed, Hingston, Arif and Davey all coming and going without seriously troubling the scorers. There was some resistance from Button, who battled well for 10 runs and a few late boundaries from Telkman, 9. The 4s ending their innings on 116, probably 20 short of a defendable total.
The second innings started quickly after, with the 4s searching for quick wickets to create pressure and drive the contest. Quick wickets would soon come about, with Telkman getting one opener caught early in the innings, and Milne at the other end soon following up with another wicket. The two openers would bowl through in great spells, with Telkman the pick of the bowlers with three wickets. The first change of bowling would see Davey and Winfield enter the fray, with the former picking up a wicket in his first over. Winfield bowled well at the other end, having a few massive appeals for LBW, including one turned down because, according to one of their umpires, “You didn’t give one in the first innings”.
Unfortunately, throughout these overs Bamville were able to chip away at the total, and a strong middle partnership allowed them to require around 30 runs to win. Dean and Button would join the attack, both bowling well but unable to break the partnership, with more appeals waved away. Throughout this one of the highlights was St Albans fielding, holding their catches, ground fielding overall strong and Hingston behind the stumps on debut performing excellently.
Bamville chased their target with a few overs to spare, and 5 wickets in the bank. Multiple appeals came and went, but St Albans will feel they left themselves 20 runs short of a defendable score.
Onto next week then, where we hope to come across a more level playing field both literally and metaphorically.
