St Albans Cricket Club Won by 79 runs

Match report St Albans U13s 162/2 (net score 352) v Redbourn U13s 108/7 (net score 273) - St Albans won by 79 runs

The nursery car park at Sandpit Lane was chocca block full and the queue of cars on the driveway almost stretched back to the road. Parents and kids alike were confused and worried that tonight’s cricket matches (both of them!) would not proceed. The investigation into the whereabouts of the gate key would have to wait until the morning, for now: how do we get in?! Frantic messages between the coaches unearthed a secret spare key in the AKJ key vault. Liberating this would avoid a time-consuming trip to CP and it was already 5.40pm. With the key in hand, James and Freya hooned through the streets of Fleetville like Travis Pastrana heading to a discount tyre sale; whilst observing the Highway Code at all times, obvs.

With the gates now open, time for cricket. The girls were on a winning streak: they had won three of their last four matches, and had beaten Redbourn by 59 runs in the away match last month. Captain Freya didn’t care which way scissor-paper-stone landed; she was confident of victory. With the toss won and Redbourn put in to bat, she strapped on her keeping pads and the girls took to the field.

Elaina bowled a tight first over but the plan to rotate the bowlers didn’t work as expected and after five overs Redbourn were 35 runs to the good; including 6 no balls which went over the rope behind the keeper. The oppo continued to have the better of the early overs until the introduction of Florence into the attack in the 9th over for her first wicket (bowled) in U13s cricket! Alice (throwing from mid on) and Freya combined to effect a run out in the 10th over and at the halfway stage the oppo were on 257. Plenty of work to be done.

Ishara bowled a tight second over and got a deserved wicket (bowled) in over 14, and in the next over, the batter hit the ball directly to Freya who took a nice catch off the bowling of Constance. This was the start of some excellent bowling by St Albans. Alice was involved again, taking a catch off Charlotte’s bowling and in Freya’s first over, the 17th, she bowled two darts to the same batter twice, resulting in two bowled wickets. Redbourn finished on 273 which was a good recovery from St Albans considering the score at the halfway stage.

Lauren and Constance opened up the reply for St Albans and after a quiet first over Constance found her feet and hammered three fours over cow corner, mid on and through cover. The bowling was a little wayward but her and Lauren ran well and put on an outstanding 45. Charlotte and Florence batted next and faced much tidier bowling which was difficult to score off. Despite this they defended well and scored 23 which included one four; a pulled shot through midwicket for Charlotte in their final over. 268 at the halfway stage.

Alice and Ishara knew that as long as we kept our wickets, the game was won but these two had clearly cooked up a plan during their warm-up, which was: run everything. This sort of activity is encouraged by The Management and puts the fielders under pressure but The Plan really needs some attention at the drawing board. With one eye on a future career shift to baseball, Ishara’s base-stealer rehearsal couldn’t have gone better. Many times she stole singles by backing up halfway down the track as Alice was striking the ball and there was at least one occasion where her enthusiasm meant she almost reached the striker’s end before the ball! Alice was clearly emboldened by this and decided that she didn’t need her batting partner to accumulate runs. In their penultimate over, Alice called a single off a bye through to the keeper which Ishara was having nothing of. “The Plan!”, thought Alice, “The Plan!”. Ishara gave her The Stare and Alice scampered back to the non-striker’s end juuuust in time to save herself from being run out.

With 300 on the board Elaina and Freya were the last pair. The game really was won by now and the girls got stuck in to the bowlers. Elaina effortlessly drove the ball through mid on and mid off for a total of five fours. Freya survived a caught and bowled attempt to hit two fours, both struck in the air over mid on. They pushed the scored to 352 and St Albans won by 79 runs. Three wins on the bounce!
