Match report This match felt like a coming of age for a number of the St Albans players. Watching Alex tap a forward defence into a gap in the covers and calling Josh through for a single showed an understanding of the game that we’ve been trying to teach over the last 5 years. Seeing William opening the bowling with a straight arm, and eeking out some swing, nibbling away at a good length and proving tough to get away was a lovely sight. And then seeing James S peppering batsmen with short stuff - a ‘plan’ that worked so well it led to Jay taking a steeping catch at fly slip - was as good a piece of bowling as you could have witnessed at Lords earlier in the day. Witnessing Oscar and Jay mopping up the tail by bowling straight so we had a relatively straightforward chase was brilliant!

The whole match played out like a highlight reel, with every player contributing to the success.

For much of the day it had seemed the weather might get the better of us, but we persevered and had the pitch at Sandpit Lane ready to go by 17:45, the early evening sun making it a sight to behold. At that point Bushey had 4 players; St Albans traffic and a few late dropouts harming their progress. Bushey would end up with 8, with two players batting twice and St Albans offering two fielders throughout so they could field with a fully complement. A forfeited toss allowed St Albans to bowl first, and early progress by Bushey was slow. The bowling was tight, and the outfield was slow, making boundaries hard to come by. The fielding was also excellent, confirming once again that practice really does help in that regard (a runout each for Atticus and Josh with direct hits providing evidence to back this up)!

Josh (1 for 6), William (0 for 9), James (1 for 4) and Atticus (2 for 6) combined for 4 wickets in the first 8 overs, leaving Bushey in trouble at 201 after 8. The 8th over included a 20 minute break for rain, and there were once again fears that a victory push would be scuppered. The hardy souls of St Albans stuck it out, and 5 minutes after the downpour abated we were back out on the field - the delay did make for a late finish (21:05 by my account).

Harry bowled with speed and control, Alex’s mystery spin proved tough to get away, and Sam and Iolo combined well by bowling straight, but Bushey’s middle order opened their arms a little, and they pushed onwards to 242 from 16.

Jay (3 for 8) and Oscar (3 for 3) bowled overs 17-20 and found the perfect line and length to trouble the batters - Jay with late away swing and Oscar with an up and down line; six wickets fell and the final score of 225 seemed under par.

The batting was (mostly) controlled, with sensible running throughout. Jay and Sam found the boundary, but 4s were not the order of the day - no runouts might be a first for the U12s this season! A slight stumble towards the finish line as Krishil took 3 late wickets, but St Albans saw it through in the fading light and ended up victorious by 25 runs. A fantastic match - thank you to the parents for staying late and helping get things tidied away so promptly; apologies if the boys were tired this morning!
